In a bid to massively cut down costs, Twitter’s new owner, Elon Musk has perfected a plan to lay off 3,700 Twitter staff. This represents more than 50 percent of the entire 7,500 workforce of the social media platform. 

Multiple sources including Bloomberg confirmed that Musk will be meeting with the affected staff on Friday. 

Investors King could recall that Elon Musk had earlier denied a report that he plans to cut 75 percent of the company’s workforce. A report by Washington Post had stated that Musk informed potential Twitter investors in early October that he plans to lay off nearly three fourth of Twitter staff. 

The recent layoff report isn’t however totally unexpected as Elon Musk emphasised the need to “rationalised headcount ” in a question and answer session with Twitter employees in June 2022. 

While calming nerves and signifying his intention to retrench only staff with no critical engagement with the company, he stated that  “Anyone who is a significant contributor should have nothing to worry about”. 

Nonetheless, the report noted that there is a possibility that laid-off employees may get some compensation. 

Meanwhile, Elon Musk has announced an increase in the monthly payment for Twitter verification checkmate from $4.99 to $8. 

Investors King had reported that the new price will come with added privileges which include posting longer video. 

While the hike in price has received a lot of backlash from several users, the new Twitter owner who also doubles as Tesla CEO reaffirmed the new price in a series of tweets. 

A Twitter user who is also an elected representative in the United States, Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez wrote, “…a billionaire earnestly trying to sell people on the idea that ‘free speech’ is actually a $8/mo subscription plan.”

In response, Elon Musk tweeted “Your feedback is appreciated, now pay $8”. He thereafter pinned the tweet on his profile to showcase his strong stance on the price hike.

Aviation Workers Kick Against the Concession of Murtala Muhammed Airport, Others

Aviation Unions have vowed to resist any attempt to concession any of the Nigerian International Airports amid a series of labour issues left unresolved. 

Rising from an emergency congress at the headquarters of the Federal Airport Authority of Nigeria (FAAN), aviation unions noted that since the decision to concession the four most important airports in Nigeria was taken, the unions have vigorously opposed the idea.

The unions which attended the emergence congress include the Air Transport Senior Staff Association of Nigeria, the National Union of Air Transport Employees, and the Association of Nigeria Aviation Professionals.

Investors King could recall that the Federal Government is planning to concession four major international airports in Nigeria which include the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport, Abuja, Murtala Mohammed International Airports, Lagos, Mallam Aminu Kano International Airport, Kano, and Port Harcourt International Airport. 

According to the government, the concessions which are currently ongoing will usher more investment into the country’s aviation industry. 

Following the successful concession of the four major international airports, the government also intends to concession at least 17 other airports which are under the management of the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN). 

Meanwhile, the Minister of Aviation, Senator Hadi Sikira has announced the preferred bidders for three of the four international airports up for grabs. 

The minister announced Corporation America Airports Consortium as the preferred bidder for Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport, Abuja while the preferred bidder for Murtala Mohammed International Airports was TAV/NAHCO Project Planet Limited. 

He added further that Corporation America Airports Consortium also emerged as the preferred bidder for Mallam Aminu Kano International Airport, Kano. 

In preparation for the concession, the minister of aviation has issued a directive for the demolition of the office of FAAN, the Nigeria Airspace Management Agency, and the Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority in Lagos.

This directive however did not go down well with aviation unions who alleged a lack of trust and transparency on the part of the minister. 

The unions observed that the rush to deliver the project at all costs showed some suspicion which could create a disaster for the country’s aviation industry.

Twitter’s new owner, Elon Musk has suspended remote work for the social media staff while he also noted that employees will now work 40 hours a week, an email sent to staff stated. 

Investors King understands that the new work policy is coming after the company sacked 3,700 workers last week, about half of Twitter’s workforce. The cut in the workforce will subsequently require more working hours from the unaffected staff. 

In addition, Musk also stated in the email message that the “road ahead is arduous and will require intense work to succeed”. He added that “difficult times” lie ahead. 

In contrast to this, the microblogging platform informed its staff in May 2020, that the company would allow staff to work from home “forever”, if they wish because it recorded huge success during the pandemic lockdown. 

However, Musk who is also the CEO of Tesla and Word richest man noted that there could be exceptions in special conditions after such a case has been personally vetted by himself. 

“Remote work is no longer allowed, unless you have a specific exception. Managers will send the exception lists to me for review and approval,” Musk wrote in the email. 

Meanwhile, Elon Musk has revealed that Twitter is having a massive drop in revenue due to the suspension of paid advertisements on the platform by some notable brands.

It will be recalled that high-spending brands such as Volkswagen, Ford, and General Motors have suspended paid advertisements on Twitter. 

The brands had raised concerns with the new policy which the social media policy will adopt. 

Elon Musk had hinted that a number of banned accounts which includes Donald Trump’s will be reinstated while the platform will be open to “free speech”. 

Therefore, a handful of brands that are concerned that the platform will eventually open its floor for hate speech and divisive content are worried about what might be the effects of it.

American multinational tech company, Google has introduced a new platform named “Interview WarmUp” to help job seekers in Africa.

The new platform which was first released in October 2022 for exclusive users will help to prepare job seekers ahead of their interview. 

Although anyone irrespective of their career choice can use the platform, a check by Investors King, however, revealed that the platform is primarily designed for people who want to seek or further a career in the tech industry

Some of the specialised fields listed on the platform include Data Analytics, E-Commerce, IT support, Project Management, and UX Design. 

Interestingly, using the platform is entirely free and it can be accessed on the latest versions of Chrome on OSX, Windows, and Android, as well as the latest version of Safari on iOS devices. 

Intending users could click on the platform website “Interview WarmUp”  to get started. 

According to Google Africa’s head of Brand and Reputation, Mojolaoluwa Aderemi-Makinde, “Interview WarmUp” is a  tool that reinforces Google’s commitment to continue helping job seekers in Africa to improve their interview skills and prepare them for the careers they want. 

She added that the tool will help the users to stand out among the large number of people seeking for the limited available job opportunities in Africa. 

Meanwhile, Google has estimated that an average job listing in Africa attracts more than 2,400 applicants which makes most of the job listings highly competitive. 

The tech company added that starting a career in a new industry could be hard especially if there are no family members, friends, or mentors that can help.

In such a case, the use of Google “Interview WarmUp” could be helpful to be better prepared and instil confidence. 

While using “Interview WarmUp”, users will be asked a number of both technical and general questions ranging from users’ background, situational approach, and technical applications.

Users can also review their responses to the question and try the process all over again until they get better at it.
