FTG Insurance Plc dominated trading on the Nigerian Exchange (NGX) on Thursday after investors exchanged more than 1.03 billion shares, accounting for the overwhelming share of market activity and driving total trading volume to nearly 1.4 billion shares.

The insurer recorded 1,030,950,933 shares valued at N1.49 billion, making it the most actively traded stock by a significant margin.

Its trading volume far exceeded that of every other listed equity during the session and was the principal driver behind the sharp increase in overall market activity.

Most Actively Traded Stocks

Company Volume Value
FTG Insurance Plc 1.031 billion N1.49 billion
MBENEFIT 59.55 million N167.81 million
Access Holdings Plc 28.57 million N791.71 million
GTCO Plc 25.74 million N3.33 billion
Zenith Bank Plc 14.32 million N1.78 billion

The exceptional activity in FTG Insurance lifted overall market participation.

Total trading volume rose from 534.45 million shares on Wednesday to 1.399 billion shares on Thursday, representing a 161.8 percent increase.

Trading value also strengthened from N22.28 billion to N27.14 billion, although the number of deals edged slightly lower from 46,943 to 46,218.

Despite FTG Insurance’s dominance by volume, GTCO Plc recorded the highest transaction value after investors traded N3.33 billion worth of its shares. Zenith Bank Plc followed with N1.78 billion, highlighting continued institutional interest in Nigeria’s leading banking stocks.

The surge in trading activity coincided with a modest improvement in the broader market.

The NGX All-Share Index (ASI) gained 0.06 percent to close at 242,378.13 points, while equity market capitalisation increased by approximately N100.51 billion to N157.150 trillion, ending the market’s two-day losing streak.

Thursday’s session underscored how activity in a single stock can influence overall market turnover. While banking stocks continued to dominate by transaction value, the extraordinary volume recorded in FTG Insurance transformed the day’s trading profile, pushing total market volume to nearly 1.4 billion shares and making the insurer the undisputed focal point of activity on the Nigerian Exchange.
