Banking stocks remained the Nigerian Exchange’s (NGX) primary source of liquidity on Wednesday as Zenith Bank Plc recorded the highest transaction value among the market’s most actively traded equities.

Although Sterling Financial Holdings Company Plc topped the volume chart with 78.11 million shares, Zenith Bank attracted the largest value of trades after investors exchanged 22.10 million shares worth N2.67 billion, indicating sustained institutional interest in one of Nigeria’s largest banking stocks.

Most Actively Traded Stocks

Company Volume Value
Sterling Financial Holdings Plc 78.11 million N582.15 million
MBENEFIT 75.54 million N216.01 million
Access Holdings Plc 25.11 million N674.22 million
Zenith Bank Plc 22.10 million N2.67 billion
Chams Plc 19.56 million N64.49 million

The trading pattern underscores the continued importance of banking stocks to overall market liquidity.

While Sterling Financial and Access Holdings ranked among the market’s most actively traded equities by volume, Zenith Bank’s transaction value significantly exceeded that of the other leading stocks, suggesting larger institutional trades were concentrated in the lender.

Compared with Tuesday’s session, banking stocks continued to feature prominently among the market’s most active counters.

Sterling Financial and Access Holdings retained their positions on the volume leaderboard, while Zenith Bank replaced Tuesday’s value leader to emerge as Wednesday’s most valuable traded equity.

The strong participation in banking stocks came despite another weak session for the broader market.

The NGX All-Share Index (ASI) declined 1.05 percent from 244,802.11 to 242,223.10 points, while equity market capitalisation fell by approximately N1.67 trillion from N158.722 trillion to N157.050 trillion.

Although profit-taking continued to weigh on market performance, the sustained concentration of trading activity in major banking stocks indicates investors continue to view the sector as the market’s principal liquidity hub.

Even in a declining market, financial institutions remained the preferred destination for both retail and institutional capital, reinforcing their central role in price discovery and trading activity on the Nigerian Exchange.
