Elon Musk has threatened to form a new political movement called the “America Party” if President Donald Trump’s controversial tax and spending bill is enacted into law, escalating an already volatile clash between the billionaire and the U.S. president.
In a series of statements on social media platform X, Musk described the proposed legislation as “utterly insane and destructive,” warning that its estimated $5 trillion in new spending would push America deeper into unsustainable debt.
“It’s time for a new political party that actually cares about the people,” Musk wrote, adding that the “America Party will be formed the next day” if the bill clears Congress.
He branded the current political establishment a “PORKY PIG PARTY!!” for what he described as reckless pork-barrel spending.
The Tesla and SpaceX CEO also vowed to fund primary challenges against any lawmaker supporting the bill, describing such politicians as “liars” who campaigned on fiscal discipline but abandoned it.
He threatened to circulate posters featuring the faces of legislators who back the spending package, labelling them as responsible for increasing the national debt.
“If this bill passes, they should hang their heads in shame. And they will lose their primary next year if it is the last thing I do on this Earth,” Musk said.
Musk previously backed the president’s election campaign with at least $250 million in donations and headed the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE), which implemented deep federal workforce cuts estimated at 120,000 jobs.
Their alliance began to unravel weeks ago when Musk publicly described the spending plan as a “disgusting abomination” and made personal accusations about the president, which he later deleted and apologized for. Trump acknowledged the apology and suggested the two had reconciled.
The dispute has resurfaced as Congress debates the massive tax and spending package ahead of a July vote. Observers say Musk’s threat to form a rival political faction could further fracture Trump’s political base ahead of a tense primary season.
Musk maintains the bill would wipe out savings achieved through prior cost-cutting initiatives while saddling future generations with higher debt.
The administration argues that the package is essential to fund infrastructure, tax cuts, and economic stimulus.
Political analysts say Musk’s direct challenge poses an unusual risk for Trump as the president navigates both party loyalty and rising pressure from prominent donors demanding tighter fiscal controls.
As of Tuesday, the White House has not responded to Musk’s latest statements. Meanwhile, congressional debate continues as lawmakers face mounting scrutiny from voters and high-profile voices like Musk, who has indicated he is prepared to spend heavily to defeat the measure — or build a new party to do so.
