Flutterwave, Africa’s leading payments technology company, has secured a key regulatory milestone in Central Africa with the approval to operate as a licensed payment service provider in Cameroon.

The authorisation was granted by the country’s National Payment Systems Department and enables the fintech firm to offer a broad suite of digital financial services to individuals and businesses.

The licence positions Flutterwave to deepen its footprint in the Central African region as part of its ongoing strategy to unify and simplify payment processes across the continent. With this development, the company will facilitate seamless digital transactions, enhance financial inclusion and improve cross-border payment capabilities in Cameroon.

Olugbenga Agboola, Founder and Chief Executive Officer of Flutterwave, described Cameroon as a vital component of the company’s long-term African strategy.

“Cameroon’s dynamic economy and growing digital adoption make it a strategic market for our expansion,” he said. “Cameroon holds a central place in the future of Africa’s digital economy, and we’re proud to play a part in unlocking its potential.”

The latest licence adds to Flutterwave’s growing list of country-specific approvals across Africa. The company recently received a Payment System licence from the Bank of Zambia, an Enhanced Payment Service Provider licence from the Bank of Ghana, and a Payment Systems Operator licence from the Bank of Uganda.

These regulatory clearances signal Flutterwave’s renewed focus on compliance and regional integration, especially following earlier scrutiny in markets like Kenya over licensing and operational transparency.

Flutterwave’s expansion into Cameroon aligns with its broader objective to build the continent’s most robust digital payment infrastructure. Since launching in 2016, the company has scaled operations to more than 30 African countries, processing payments for global enterprises such as Uber, Microsoft and Booking.com as well as thousands of small and medium-sized enterprises.

With the Cameroon approval, Flutterwave aims to bridge gaps in payment interoperability while supporting the country’s digital transformation agenda.

The firm’s platform enables local and international merchants to collect, disburse, and manage payments efficiently across multiple channels.

Analysts view the development as a strategic move to consolidate the company’s leadership in Africa’s fintech landscape, especially at a time when regulatory compliance is becoming a critical factor in market expansion and investor confidence.

As the digital economy in Africa continues to evolve, Flutterwave’s commitment to regulatory engagement and innovation places it in a strong position to support regional economic growth and accelerate the shift towards cashless ecosystems.
