Peter Obi, the presidential candidate of the Labour Party (LP) in the 2023 elections, has urged members of his party in the National Assembly to uphold democratic principles and resist any actions that could undermine the will of the people.
In a statement released on Wednesday, Obi addressed what he described as a deteriorating democratic process in Nigeria, marked by electoral fraud, disregard for qualifications in leadership positions, and unconstitutional removals of elected officials.
A Call for Legislative Integrity
Since their inauguration, Obi stated that he had refrained from interfering in the activities of Labour Party lawmakers in the Senate and House of Representatives, respecting their independence. However, he emphasized that the current political climate necessitates urgent intervention.
“I urge you to stand as true defenders of justice. Do not participate in or support any action, decision, or vote that compromises the integrity of our democracy,” Obi stated.
He specifically referenced the ongoing political crisis in Rivers State, where the controversial removal of elected officials has raised concerns over constitutional breaches.
Standing Against Political Manipulation
Obi warned lawmakers against being used as instruments of injustice, emphasizing the need to uphold fairness, equity, and transparency in all legislative actions.
His statement comes amid growing concerns over the manipulation of democratic institutions, particularly regarding the influence of powerful political figures in shaping electoral outcomes.
“The well-being of the people of Rivers State must take precedence over political convenience,” Obi asserted, urging Labour Party lawmakers to reject any attempts to subvert democracy.
A New Nigeria is Possible
Obi concluded his statement by reinforcing his vision for a New Nigeria, calling on leaders to act in the interest of the people rather than political elites. “Together, let us stand firm in our resolve—because a new Nigeria is possible!” he declared.
His message serves as a rallying call for Labour Party lawmakers to remain principled and unwavering in their commitment to democratic ideals, as Nigeria faces a critical test in governance and political accountability.
