Tensions escalated in Rivers State on Wednesday as Governor Siminalayi Fubara was denied access to the official quarters of the state House of Assembly along Aba Road, Port Harcourt.

The complex, which has become the focal point of a lingering political standoff, remains under the control of lawmakers loyal to his predecessor, Nyesom Wike.

The governor, accompanied by top government officials, including Secretary to the State Government, Dr. Tammy Danagogo, and Chief of Staff, Edison Ehie, arrived at the Assembly quarters only to find the gate locked, effectively preventing his entry.

Addressing journalists at the scene, Fubara expressed frustration over his inability to reach Speaker Martin Amaewhule, stating that multiple calls placed to the lawmaker had gone unanswered.

“Before my arrival here, I made several attempts to speak to the Speaker. I also sent a letter which was transmitted for this particular invitation,” the governor explained.

He described the sealed-off complex as a sign of deliberate obstruction, emphasizing that his visit was in line with his constitutional duties as governor.

“Unfortunately, at the gate, you can see that the place is completely sealed, and there is no sign that anything is going to happen today,” Fubara added.

Despite the setback, the governor insisted that his administration remained focused on serving the people, reaffirming his commitment to governance and stability in the state.

“The reason why we are doing this, I have always said, is in the interest of our people, which is the most important thing. I don’t think there is anything to worry about. I expect to hear from them after today,” he stated.

The development is the latest in the ongoing power tussle between Fubara and pro-Wike lawmakers, a crisis that has continued to shape political events in the state.

After addressing the press, the governor and his entourage left the premises, leaving uncertainty over whether the political impasse between the executive and legislative arms of government would soon be resolved.
