The Labour Party has hinted Nigerians of its plan to re-field former Anambra State Governor, Peter Obi, as its candidate in the 2027 general elections, expressing readiness to dislodge the ruling All Progressives Congress from power.
This is coming amid internal bickerings rocking the party.
However, political pundits told Investors King that the announcement by the leadership of the party of Obi’s second chance to contest the presidential election might signals cohesion in the party.
The National Publicity Secretary of the party, Abayomi Arabambi, who was appearing on a national television programme on Thursday, made the announcement.
He predicted victory for LP, saying President Bola Tinubu’s second shot at the presidency would not be a smooth sail.
According to Arabambi, “Tinubu is not just going to have it very easy in 2027, we are coming back with that Peter Obi to them so that they will know we are very serious.”
Reacting to the detection of an actor-turned-politician, Kenneth Okonkwo, from the party, Arabambi said Okonwko’s exit from LP is a relief.
He said the party plans to unseat the present administration come 2027 and would not be needing distractions.
The Publicity Secretary doubted Okonkwo’s loyalty to the LP, accusing him of working for President Tinubu and the ruling APC to further worsen the flight of the party.
Wishing Okonkwo well in his decision, he said the legal luminary’s resignation is good riddance to bad rubbish, warning him against speaking about the Labour Party anymore.
“There is no leadership crisis in the Labour Party. Labour Party is not going into extinction. It is just a figment of the imaginations of most of our detractors,” Arabambi stated.
Investors King recalls that Obi was the party’s presidential candidate in 2023 but lost to President Bola Tinubu, the then-candidate of the All Progressives Congress.
The former Anambra State governor came third in the polls, trailing behind former Vice President, Atiku Abubakar of the Peoples Democratic Party.
Obi has since losing the election holding the current administration to account and making covert mobilisation for his political dream.
