Twitter will soon begin to delete 1.5 billion dormant accounts, new owner, Elon Musk disclosed this in a tweet on Friday.
The move is sequel to Musk’s confirmation in November that he will purge accounts that have not been active in the last 15 years.
Highlighting the importance of it, Musk who also doubles as Tesla CEO noted that the deleted accounts will help to free the space being occupied by those accounts on Twitter.
Investors King understands that since Elon Musk bought Twitter in a dramatic move, he has been dedicating his time to the microblogging platform, sometimes sleeping in his office at Twitter HQ. A development that Tesla shareholders have questioned, claiming the tech billionaire is spending more time with Twitter at the expense of Tesla.
“Twitter will soon start freeing the namespace of 1.5 billion accounts. These are obvious account deletions with no tweets and no log-in for years,” Musk noted in his tweet.
Commenting on Elon Musk’s announcement of plans to delete dormant accounts, some Twitter users commended the move while others queried the billionaire saying he has yet to fulfil his promise of restoring suspended accounts before thinking of deleting inactive accounts.
Musk has promised to reinstate suspended accounts including Former President of the United States, Donald Trump. He has since reinstated Trump’s account but the former president has yet to tweet ever since.
On November 30, 2022, Elon Musk announced that Twitter has begun removing spam accounts — an issue he had strongly raised before buying Twitter for $44 billion at the end of October.
Since taking over Twitter, Musk has been making swift and controversial changes for the social media company, from ending remote work for staff to cutting half of its workforce.
In addition, he also increased the monthly subscription fee for verified accounts from $4.99 to $8, making the highly coveted blue checkmark to be available for purchase.
Before now, Twitter checkmark is exclusive for big brands, politicians, journalists, musicians, and sport personalities among other public figures.
