The United Kingdom (UK) parliament has voted Secretary of State for Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Affairs, Mary Elizabeth Truss as the new UK Prime Minister.

The South West Norfolk MP, who has been in Parliament since May 2010, takes over from Boris Johnson, becoming the Conservatives Party’s fourth PM since the 2015 election.

Truss, 47, is the third female to be UK Prime Minister after “Iron Lady” Margaret Hilda Thatcher and later Theresa Mary May.

She defeated former Chancellor of the Exchequer, Rishi Sunak to attain the feat. She received 81,326 votes, against 60,399 votes cast for Sunak.

The result was announced by Sir Graham Stuart Brady, Returning Officer & Chairman of the 1922 Committee.
