Improved foreign exchange access and better than expected internet penetration bolstered smartphones demand and accessibility in 2018.

A report titled ‘Nigeria Mobile Report’ released by Jumia showed that the average price of smartphones declined by 19 per cent to $95 in the last two years.

According to the e-commerce giant, the average price of smartphones in Nigeria was $117 in 2016, down from $216 in 2014.

This, the ‘Amazon of Africa’ attributed to the influx of affordable phones from China.

“The average price of smartphones continues on a downward trajectory, as it dipped to $95 in 2018, from US$ 117 in 2016, and US$ 216 in 2014,” the mobile report said.

The company also stated, “This development is laudable as again, the major driver of this trend is attributed to the influx of Asian brands specifically targeted for the Nigerian market.

“Asian brands have consistently enjoyed massive patronage because of their Africa-specific strategy of introducing lower price point smartphones into the Nigerian market.”

The top five most preferred smartphone brands in Nigeria are Fero Mobile, Samsung, Nokia, Infinix and Tecno.

In particular, Jumia said Nokia perception as a durable brand in Nigeria continues to aid its growth among youths.

Similarly, in 2018 Samsung, Nokia, Infinix, and Tecno were customers’ favourites on Jumia platform.

“It is interesting that a one- time king of mobile phone, Nokia is gradually returning to the limelight, riding on its durability claim. Infinix continues to lead the pack, year on year,” it added.

On Jumia platform, Lagos ordered the highest number of mobile phone in 2018, followed by Abuja, Rivers, Edo, and Delta.

The e-commerce company, however, predicted that around 700 million new mobile subscribers from various countries would push the total number of global mobile to 6 billion between 2019 and 20125.

Jumia said Nigeria is one of the nations identified to make significant contributions to global mobile penetration. Others are India, China, Pakistan, Indonesia, USA, and Brazil.

It said, “It is predicted that Nigeria will contribute four per cent of the estimated 700 million new global mobile subscribers, making it the only country in Africa marked with a significant contribution to increasing mobile penetration in the world.”

Standard Bank Appoints Sanni Chief Executive for Africa

The Standard Bank Group, Africa’s largest bank by assets has appointed Yinka Sanni as its new Chief Executive for Africa Regions and a member of the Group Leadership Council.

Sanni, the group’s Regional Chief Executive for West Africa, takes over from Sola David-Borha, who is retiring after 31 years of service to the banking group.

This was disclosed in a statement.

Sanni holds a B. Agric. (Hons) degree in Agricultural Economics from the University of Nigeria and an MBA from Obafemi Awolowo University. He attended the Advanced Management Programme at Harvard Business School in 2009, and the Global CEO Programme at the Wharton School in 2017. He has over 30 years of experience in the financial sector across wholesale, retail and asset management, and joined Standard Bank Group’s Nigerian subsidiary, Stanbic IBTC Bank Plc, in December 1990.

In a note to employees, Standard Bank Group CEO, Sim Tshabalala, congratulated Sanni on his appointment and thanked David-Borha for her extraordinary contributions to the group.

“Sola was appointed as the Chief Executive of Africa Regions in January 2017 and is one of the group’s most deeply expert and experienced bankers,” Tshabalala said.

“Under her leadership, the Africa Regions portfolio has grown remarkably in capacity, market share and contribution to the group’s headline earnings.”

David-Borha has been a passionate advocate of culture change and executive leadership development, having sponsored the ‘Last Mile’ programme, which has resulted in the successful promotion of talented people into both Regional Chief Executive and Country Chief Executive positions, including the appointment of two female Chief Executives in the Africa Regions business.

“It has been a great honour and privilege to serve and contribute to the growth of the Standard Bank Group,” David-Borha said.

“I am delighted to be handing over to Yinka Sanni, an exceptional, authentic and experienced leader who will take the baton forward in driving Africa’s growth.”

David-Borha will remain with the group until the end of June to ensure a successful leadership transition and handover process. Sanni’s appointment is effective from today, 15 April.
