The Democratic Republic of Congo has received $80 million in grants from the World Bank
The latest Ebola outbreak that has killed 483 people of 807 confirmed cases in the Democratic Republic of Congo is a new source of worries as World Bank and other global organizations look to curb it before spreading any further.
Pandemic Emergency Financing facility, which was set up by the bank in 2017 to encourage private investment into the development aid sector, funded $20 million of the total grant.
While the remaining amount was from the World Bank group member, the International Development Association that funds low-income nations.
Kristalina Georgieva, the World Bank Group interim president and chief executive, said the new funds will “ensures that lifesaving work can be urgently scaled up, and that lack of funding is not a constraint”.
Oly Ilunga Kalenga, DRC health minister, said the fresh funding “allows us and our partners to concentrate fully on fighting Ebola and protecting the health of our citizens”.
