The Minister of Power, Works and Housing, Mr. Babatunde Fashola, has said that the reconstruction of the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway is part of the measures by the Federal Government to improve travellers’ experience and also take the economy out of recession.

Fashola said this during an inspection of the Long Bridge in Ogun State on Monday, which he said had been completed before the scheduled period.

He said the resurfacing of the bridge, which was meant to be completed before December 31, had to be done speedily to ease travellers’ movement ahead of the yuletide.

He stated that although movement was restricted extensively on the road few weeks ago, a situation that caused some discomfort to commuters, appreciable progress had been made, adding that the contractors also fulfilled their promise concerning opening of the road fully for traffic ahead of the specified time.

The minister, however, said there were problems repairing the road as commuters were not patient enough.

Fashola said, “In some cases, some commuters did not comply, they jumped lanes, making movement difficult for the construction companies and other commuters.

“There will be other diversions further down the road by Julius Berger on the Lagos to Shagamu bypass, and Reynolds Construction Company on the Shagamu bypass to Ibadan, and by many contractors across the country in areas such as Kano, Maiduguri, Port Harcourt, Ilorin, Sokoto and all other places where construction work is going on.

“We need the cooperation of commuters to bear with us during this period.”

He added that the government’s intentions were clearly in the commuters’ interest, to give them a better motoring experience.

Fashola also appealed to motorists to avoid driving under the influence of alcohol and engaging in substance abuse, urging them to drive safely, carefully and observe speed limits.
