Open-source content management system (CMS), WordPress, has ended its Jetpack social connection to Twitter due to a sudden increase in price.

WordPress users and content creators will no longer be able to use the plugin Jetpack Social to automatically share their posts on Twitter.

WordPress made this announcement via a blog post, stating that they experienced an unexpected suspension of their Twitter API access in early April, which powers Jetpack Social. Although the service was restored the same day, Twitter decided to change the terms and pricing of the Twitter API without prior notice.

WordPress attempted to negotiate new terms with Twitter but was unsuccessful, leading to the Twitter connection on Jetpack Social ceasing to work. Consequently, blog posts will no longer be auto-shared to Twitter.

Users can still share their posts on Twitter manually by pasting the post link into the body of their tweet. Jetpack’s auto-sharing feature still works on other social media platforms like LinkedIn, Facebook, and Tumblr, and will soon be introduced to Instagram and Mastodon.

WordPress is the latest company to drop from Twitter over the sudden price hike for its API. The website-creation company joins other companies like New York City Subway, Microsoft, and Intercom, which have also dropped from Twitter.

Developers have disclosed that the new pricing will force them to shutter their Twitter-based apps, killing services like Twitexplorer and FeedHive, amongst others. Investors King understands that this change in pricing is already causing disruptions in the Twitter ecosystem.
