Eliud Kipchoge, a Kenyan marathon runner, on Saturday became the first human to run a 26.2-mile marathon under two hours.

Kipchoge, 34, completed the race at exactly 1:59:40.2 in Vienna, Austria where the INEOS 1:59 Challenge was organised.

“Today we went to the moon and came back to Earth! I am at a loss for words for all the support I have received from all over the world,” Kipchoge tweeted Saturday. “Thank you to all who gave me the opportunity. Asante.”

In 2017, Kipchoge failed to break the record after completing the race in two hours 25 seconds. Two years later, he did it with the right adjustments to his nutrition, training and time management.

However, Kipchoge’s history-making success won’t be in the official record book because it was not done under a perfect marathon setting, he was the only one running.

Still, Kipchoge holds the world record for men’s marathon for his 2:01:39 time in Berlin Marathon 2018.

He is now expected to repeat or try to repeat the same in a normal marathon setting.
