FG to Conduct Biometrics Registration of Migrants

  • FG to Conduct Biometrics Registration of Migrants

The federal government has unfolded plans to carry out biometrics registration of all regular migrants who have overstayed their visas in Nigeria.

The Minister of Interior, Lt. Gen. Abdulrahman Danbazau, made this disclosure yesterday, during a panel session at the opening ceremony of International Press Institute (IPI) Congress at the Presidential Villa, Abuja.

Danbazau, Minister of Finance, Kemi Adeosun; Minister of Information, Lai Mohammed and Minister of Trade and Investment, Dr Okey Enelamah, were on the panel hosted by the President of Broadcasting Organisation of Nigeria ( BON) and CEO of Channels TV, Mr. John Momoh.

Danbazau said the biometrics on the migrants, who are resident in the country would provide data and would enable the federal government to monitor the movement of such individuals.

His disclosure was in view of escalating communal clashes between herdsmen and farmers in some parts of the country.

He said the process was ongoing, adding that the authority will be able to conclude it as soon as possible.

According to him, the Nigerian Immigration Service will also take charge of all data base of all Nigerians including green cards holders.

“The Ministry of Interior has established a situation room that is connected to the border posts that will enable effective monitoring of what is happening at our borders. I will also be able to see what is happening from that situation room,” Danbazau said.

He added that though Nigeria wanted to protect its vast borders against criminal elements, the ECOWAS protocol on free movement was in the interest of the country, as Nigerians constituted more than half of West African population.

The minister accused the Zamfara State Governor, Yari Abdulaziz, of abdicating his responsibility as the Chief Security Officer of the state, which led to the rising cases of banditry in the state.

He said the solution to the Zamfara killings was good governance, rather than inviting soldiers, adding that the security of state is the responsibility of the governors and not the federal government.

“Good governance is the final solution to the security challenges in Zamfara; it is not the number of soldiers. It is not good governance for the Governor of Zamfara to say he is withdrawing as chief security officer. Even if he is given all the soldiers in the world, he can’t use those forces to deal with those issues,” he said.

He attributed the herders and farmers’ clashes to the fall-out from demographic pressure and criminality , saying more lives were lost to cattle rustling in Zamfara than to pastoralists/farmer strife in Benue State.

He said federal government had in the last year spent $7.5 billion on provision of infrastructure, including road, railway and power across the nation.

In her welcome remarks, the Executive Director, IPI, Barbara Trionfi, said delegates from 40 countries were attending the 61 IPI World Congress in Nigeria.

She , however, lamented the erosion of press freedom globally, saying independent journalists faced attacks in Zimbabwe, Turkey, Mexico, Russia, Ethiopia and Philippine.

Trionfi said journalists these countries were denied access to justice and were also threatened.

She said murder of journalists is the easiest way to silence them.

“As journalists are attacked all over the world, the journalism community are coming together in solidarity as editors, reporters and publishers. If we can’t convince our readers and leaders about independent journalism as path to fight for, it will be very easy for those who want to silence journalists to do so,” Trionfi said.

We Didn’t Cause Hardship in Nigeria – APC

All Progressive Congress (APC)

The All Progressives Congress in Osun State has argued that the economic crisis ravaging millions of Nigerians was not the handiwork of the party at the centre.

A former Speaker, Osun State House of Assembly, Timothy Owoeye, made this known Monday.

He said the APC-led Federal Government inherited the hardship in the country which has been in existence for years.

Owoeye, a chieftain of APC in the state was addressing a press conference in Osogbo, capital of Osun State on the activities lined up to mark the 70th birthday anniversary of the Minister of Marine and Blue Economy, Gboyega Oyetola.

Fielding questions from journalists on whether the decision of Oyetola to distribute raw food items was to partly address the hunger allegedly caused by the incumbent administration in the country, Owoeye said the former governor of Osun State would be giving out food to identify with the less privileged and also as a way of appreciating God’s mercy in his life.

He disagreed that the ruling APC plunged the nation into economic woes, saying the current situation dated many years back.

“I want you to know that the present situation in Nigeria was not caused by the APC. It has been there for ages. And for our leader to celebrate the 70th birthday at this time is a way to identify himself with the less privileged people across the state. Giving out foods is not new, it is a way to let you know that our leader, our amiable Honourable Minister for Marine and Blue Economy is a lover of the masses. For him to deem it fit to distribute food for the less privileged is a way of identifying himself with other people, not only the first class elites.

“Those who are close to our principal (Oyetola) will agree with me that Oyetola is a person that considers others. So, with his magnanimity, he believes that sharing food is a way to celebrate God’s mercy in his life and he is doing this by himself to distribute food across the state. The food will be taken to churches, mosques and accredited centers across the state. So, he is doing it by himself. And as of now, there is no way we can categorically say that this is the number of the people that will benefit but I know they are in thousands,” the former lawmaker said.

While disclosing that the Minister would be carrying out medical outreach for about 5,000 residents of the state as part of activities marking his birthday, Owoeye said Osun APC would be celebrating the Minister moderately.

He said, “As far as the medical outreach is concerned, our target is 1,000 patients per centre. The four-day medical outreach is to treat the vulnerable and the needy beginning from Osogbo on Tuesday, 24th September, 2024 at Tinubu/Shettima Campaign Office at 9:00am while the medical outreach train would move to Ilesa on Wednesday 25th, September, 2024 starting from 9:00am.

“The people of Iwo would have the opportunity to patronize the medical outreach programme on Thursday 26th September, 2024 at 9:00am while it would be the turn of the people of Iragbiji to have an access to the medical outreach on  Friday 26th September, 2024 with the climax of the programme in Ilesa with surgery on Saturday 28th September, 2024.

“We shall be distributing raw food items to the less-privileged members of the society at selected mosques, churches and other accredited centres across the state on Friday 27th September and Sunday 28th September, 2024.

“Finally, the 70th birthday celebration anniversary grand finale will hold in Iragbiji with a lecture and prayer session at the Iragbiji residence of the Honourable Minister of Marine and Blue Economy.”

How Obaseki’s Many Controversies Terminated Ighodalo’s Dream of Governing Edo

Governor Godwin Obaseki of Edo State

Political analysts have dissected the just concluded Saturday’s governorship election in Edo State, saying that Governor Godwin Obaseki contributed largely to the defeat of the ruling Peoples Democratic Party in the state.

The Independent National Electoral Commission declared Monday Okpebholo of the All Progressives Congress (APC) the winner of the keenly contested Saturday 21, 2024 governorship election in Edo State.

Okpebholo was declared the Edo State Governor Elect with 291,667 votes to defeat Asue Ighodalo of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) who got 247,274 and Olumide Akpata of the Labour Party (LP) who came a distant third in the race with 22,761 votes.

Fourteen other candidates contested the seat but got less than the three frontline candidates.

Edo is one of the eight states where governorship elections are held off-season due to litigations and court judgements. Others are Anambra, Bayelsa, Ekiti, Imo, Kogi, Osun and Ondo.

X-raying the poll, some political analysts argued that Obaseki created many enemies for himself before the election and that his political enemies cashed on the election to pay him back.

According to an analyst, Ibe Orji, in an interview with Investors King, Obaseki’s feud with Philip Shaibu robbed the governor’s anointed candidate the chance of occupying Osadebe House in the state.

Orji said, “There are many factors that made PDP lost the election on Saturday. Out of these reasons, Governor Godwin Obaseki shared major part of them. His number one sin is that he forced his former Deputy Governor, Philip Shaibu out of his government. No real political strategist would do that when you know the elections are just a few months ahead.

“If you have also been monitoring events in Edo State, you would know that former governor of the state, Adams Oshiomole had sworn to pay Obaseki back in his coin. The Wike factor is also against him because Obaseki is one of the governors who tackled the Minister of FCT in his battle with his successor, Sim Fubara.”

Also speaking in an interview with Investors King, a political analyst, John Dreck, disclosed that the face-off between Obaseki and the traditional institution in the state would have counted against his candidate.

However, Okpebholo, the Edo Central Senator, leveraged significant influence in his senatorial district, and joined forces with his colleague in the National Assembly from Edo North, Adams Oshiomhole, to defeat Ighodalo, the anointed candidate of the outgoing governor.

Okpebholo’s victory could also be attributed to his alliance with Dennis Idahosa, his running mate who is a federal lawmaker; and Obaseki’s estranged deputy, Philip Shaibu.

The declaration on Sunday evening brings Okpebholo closer to achieving his goal of becoming governor of the state and places his party, the APC, on the cusp of a return to power at the Dennis Osadebe Government House.

The APC lost power in the state in 2020 after the incumbent, Godwin Obaseki, defected from the party to the PDP in the heat of an intra-party squabble and fallout with his predecessor, Oshiomhole. After he was denied the APC governorship ticket, Obaseki joined the PDP and clinched the ticket to defeat APC’s Osagie Ize-Iyamu to seal his second term which will end on November 12, 2024.

Obaseki campaigned strongly for Ighodalo, while Oshiomhole was a focal figure for Okpebholo’s campaign, attending rallies and interviews on behalf of the APC candidate.

Okpebholo was declared winner of Saturday’s election amid protests by supporters of the PDP who strongly posited that the results were fabricated and did not represent the will of the people.

Meanwhile, President Bola Tinubu has congratulated the governor-elect and asked him not to gloat over his victory but see it as a challenging call to service.

The President asked those who feel aggrieved to approach the court for redress.

Israel Intensifies Air Strikes on Hezbollah, Civilians Told to Evacuate South Lebanon

Published

on

Israel stepped up air strikes against Hezbollah in Lebanon and told civilians in the south to leave areas near where the group operates, as hostilities between the two sides intensified.

Israel targeted several towns on Monday including Tyre and Bint Jbeil in the south, Lebanon’s state-run National News Agency reported, while the northern Jbeil reported its first missile hit — some 170 kilometers (106 miles) from the border. The Lebanese Health Ministry said at least one person was killed and six were injured in an air strike on the eastern town of Hermel.

In northern Israel, hundreds of thousands of people rushed to bomb shelters after 150 projectiles were fired. Hezbollah has access to a new type of rocket that can reach as far as 100 kilometers and carry 170 kilograms of explosives in its warhead, the group said on its Telegram channel over the weekend.

Israel is looking to destroy Hezbollah’s launchers, missiles and rockets to degrade the Iran-backed group’s military capabilities and is focusing on an aerial campaign for now, an Israeli military official said, indicating a ground invasion isn’t imminent. The person asked not to be identified discussing sensitive information.

The two sides have been exchanging cross-border rocket fire almost daily since Israel’s war with Hamas erupted last October, but the conflict has stepped up a level in the past week. The US is urging restraint and Secretary of Defense Lloyd Austin has spoken to Israeli counterpart Yoav Gallant several times in recent days, stressing “the importance of achieving a diplomatic solution,” the Pentagon said.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has said he shares that objective, but such efforts have failed to stop Hezbollah’s attacks. His cabinet has made the return of tens of thousands of displaced civilians a primary war objective, while Gallant has indicated a shift of focus north from the battlegrounds of Gaza.

Netanyahu is scheduled to address the United Nations General Assembly at its summit in New York this week, though his travel itinerary hasn’t yet been published.

The escalation in fighting, which until last week remained within the so-called rules of engagement, came after Hezbollah and Lebanon blamed Israel for blowing up thousands of pagers and walkie talkies, mostly used by members of the group, in a two-day operation in Lebanon that killed at least 39 people, including civilians and children, and injured thousands.

Israel’s Increasingly Focused On the Threat of Hezbollah

Hezbollah said the attack was a major blow to its security and vowed to respond.

On Friday, Israel killed a top Hezbollah commander in an air strike on a building in Beirut’s southern suburbs, where the group has a strong presence. The bombing killed many other fighters and senior individuals who local media said were in a meeting. The death toll from the air strike rose to 52 and Civil Defense teams are still searching for survivors, according to health officials.

Civilians in the south of Lebanon should “immediately move out of harm’s way,” a spokesperson for the Israel Defense Forces, Daniel Hagari, said in a briefing on Monday. Residents of some villages reported they received phone calls urging them to leave their homes.

Lebanon’s Information Minister Ziyad Makari received a similar call to evacuate the building he was in.

Hagari said it’s possible Hamas chief Yahya Sinwar has been wounded or killed in air strikes on Gaza, after local media reported he has recently been incommunicado.

“Regarding what has surfaced over the last day about Sinwar, I do not rule it out nor do I confirm it,” he said.

The Israeli government says Sinwar masterminded the Oct. 7 attack on Israel that triggered the ongoing war in Gaza. Last month, he was promoted to succeed the group’s political head, Ismail Haniyeh, who was assassinated in Tehran, and is now the point-man for long-running truce talks mediated by the US, Qatar and Egypt.

Hezbollah started firing on Israel on Oct. 8 in solidarity with Hamas. Both groups are backed by Iran and designated as terrorist organizations by the US.
