The Tin Can Island command of the Nigeria Customs Service said that it generated total revenue of N104.5bn between January and April this year.

The Customs Area Controller, Tin Can Island command, Musa Abdullahi, who disclosed this to journalists in Lagos, saying that the revenue was 90.09 per cent of the projected N116bn.

According to him, the revenue collection is an improvement of 27.61 per cent over the N82.154bn recorded in the same period of 2017.

He attributed the improved collection to the establishment of standard operating procedure and blocking of leakages.

In the period under review, according to Abdullahi, the command seized contrabands worth N124m including containers of Tramadol, toxic e-waste, 1,239 bales of second hand clothing and used tyres.

He said that in pursuance of the Federal Government’s initiative on ease of doing business, the command had improved on the 48 hours cargo clearing time, adding that some categories of goods were being cleared from the Customs zone within six hours.

The trade facilitation structure, according to the Tin Can Island CAC, has been strengthened in the area of fast-track facilities.

He said, “Tin Can Island command is committed to the transformation of our revenue collection and reporting system.

“We have the Biometric Access System; and introduction of a ‘one-stop shop’ which will enable the treatment of declarations with valuations, classification and other related clearance issues/queries.

“There is also automation of the cargo examination and assignment process where examination officers are assigned examination automatically; this is designed to ensure transparency in the inspection process.”

On the vehicle valuation system, Abdullahi noted that there had been an attachment of valuation note in the system that would enable a quick verification of assessment and duty payment.

“Ultimately, the full automation of the vehicles valuation will soon be achieved,” he said

The Customs boss also spoke on export, noting that there had been a remarkable improvement as the command facilitated the exportation of 38,517 metric tonnes of agricultural produce, valued at N822.435bn and N6.1bn worth of processed manufactured goods.

There was an improvement rate of 558.46 per cent in terms of export volume, and 402.24 per cent in terms of Free On Board value, he said.
