The Federal Government has called for more support from professional bodies and other stakeholders in the economy in tacking the issue of sub-standard products in the country.

The Minister of State for Industry, Trade and Investment, Aisha Abubakar, made the call in Abuja on Wednesday at the opening session of a symposium to mark the World Standards Day.

The event had as its theme, ‘Standards make smart city’.

Abubakar described non-adherence to standards as a major problem affecting the growth and development of the economy.

For instance, she said the issue of building collapse, fire disasters, flooding and improper waste management, among others, could be adequately dealt with if the various professional groups and associations work with the Standards Organisation of Nigeria in optimising the application of international standards in the country.

The minister stated, “The critical issues of making our cities and buildings smarter from conceptualisation, through design and construction, that provides for safety, access, good ventilation and aesthetics are some of the issues that the theme of this year’s World Standards Day is calling our attention to.
