  • EU, Germany Support Nigeria’s Energy Project with €25m

The European Union and the German government are jointly providing a total of €25m (N8.1bn) as energy support fund for the first phase of the Nigerian Energy Support Programme.

According to the Federal Ministry of Power, Works and Housing, five states in the country are already benefiting from the NESP project, explaining that the programme was part of the Sustainable Energy for All initiative of the United Nations.

The Deputy Director, Renewable Energy, FMPWH, who doubles as the Country Focal Point, SE4All, Mr. Faruk Yabo, told our correspondent on the sidelines of an energy event organised by the ministry in Abuja on Wednesday that many donors were also supporting the sustainable energy programme in the country.

He said, “The NESP One is being funded by approximately €25m, which is the contribution from the European Union and the German government. That is purely under the NESP, but of course, there are many other donors that are contributing a lot of money into these areas of sustainable energy for all initiative.”

On locations where the NESP was implemented, Yabo said, “The Niger State government is one of the five partner states that we’ve been working with under the Nigerian Energy Support Programme that is funded by the German government and the EU, and is implemented by the Ministry of Power together with the GIZ.

“So far we have been able to help the states to come out with electrification plans, which establish the total number of clusters in the states, their levels of electrification, what are the least cost of providing electricity for them, etc.”

He added, “Aside Niger, other states in the partnership include Sokoto, Cross River, Ogun and Plateau, and all of their commissioners are here. The idea was to select one state from each of the six geopolitical zone.
