The Department of State Services (DSS) has instituted legal proceedings against former Kaduna State Governor, Nasir El-Rufai, at the Federal High Court in Abuja over allegations linked to the interception of communications involving the National Security Adviser (NSA).

According to court filings, the security agency is seeking judicial determination over claims that El-Rufai unlawfully accessed or referenced a private telephone conversation connected to the NSA.

The DSS argues that the alleged conduct raises national security and cyber-related concerns requiring legal scrutiny.

The suit reportedly contains multiple counts centered on unlawful interception and the handling of sensitive communications.

Prosecutors are expected to rely on statutory provisions governing electronic communications, cyber activity and national security protections.

The case follows public remarks attributed to the former governor in which he referenced access to a telephone conversation involving senior security officials.

The DSS maintains that any unauthorized interception or disclosure of protected communications constitutes a breach of federal law.

No hearing date has been publicly confirmed, but the matter is now before the Federal High Court for adjudication. Legal analysts note that the proceedings could test the interpretation of Nigeria’s cyber and communications laws, particularly as they relate to high-profile public officials.

El-Rufai has yet to formally respond in court at the time of reporting. Observers expect the defence to challenge both the factual basis of the allegations and the legal grounds of the charges.

The development adds a new dimension to ongoing tensions within Nigeria’s political and security landscape, as the judiciary prepares to examine the claims and determine the next procedural steps.
