UBA, Associates Fail to Appear as Court Fraud Case Is Adjourned

Proceedings in an alleged fraud case involving United Bank for Africa (UBA) Plc and several other defendants were on Monday stalled after the accused parties failed to appear in court, prompting an adjournment of the matter.

The case, which is being handled by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), was scheduled for hearing before a special offences court in Lagos.

However, when the matter was called, neither the bank nor the other named defendants were present to take their plea.

Prosecuting counsel informed the court that efforts to serve the defendants were ongoing, adding that some of the accused parties were yet to be properly brought before the court.

The absence of the defendants prevented the commencement of formal proceedings, including arraignment.

The court subsequently adjourned the case to a later date to allow for proper service and ensure the appearance of all parties.

The judge stressed the need for due process and compliance with procedural requirements before the case could proceed.

The charges relate to alleged financial infractions linked to foreign exchange transactions, with the EFCC seeking to prosecute the defendants over claims involving substantial monetary sums.

The commission has maintained that the case forms part of its broader efforts to strengthen enforcement against financial crimes within the banking and financial services sector.

UBA has not issued a public statement on the adjournment at the time of filing this report. The outcome of the case is being closely watched by market participants, given its potential implications for regulatory oversight, corporate governance, and compliance standards within Nigeria’s banking industry.

The matter is expected to return to court on the adjourned date, subject to successful service and the appearance of all defendants.
