Panic erupted in Abeokuta, Ogun State on Tuesday evening after a gas explosion occurred behind the Alake Sports Centre, the current venue of the ongoing national handball event.
The explosion, which reportedly emanated from a gas refilling point adjacent to the sports facility, sent shockwaves through the area and caused immediate disruption to sporting activities and nearby residential communities.
Eyewitnesses told Investors King that a loud blast was heard around the evening hours, followed by visible plumes of smoke and frantic movement by both residents and participants at the venue.
“There was a sudden blast. Everyone started running in different directions. It was chaotic,” one resident near the site said.
Emergency responders, including personnel from the fire service, the Ogun State Emergency Management Agency (OGSEMA), and local security forces, swiftly mobilized to the scene to contain any potential escalation.
As of the time of filing this report, no official statement has been issued regarding the extent of damage or possible casualties. The area surrounding the explosion site has been sealed off as a precautionary measure while investigations continue.
Ogun State safety officials are expected to release a preliminary report after a full risk assessment is conducted. Meanwhile, sports authorities have not indicated any immediate suspension of the ongoing games at the Alake Sports Centre.
