Abia State Governor Dr. Alex Otti has approved the establishment of a 10-megawatt Independent Power Plant (IPP) at Abia State University (ABSU), Uturu.

The project is aimed at addressing electricity challenges in the university and the surrounding Uturu community.

Governor Otti made the announcement during a civic reception in his honor at Isuikwuato High School, Otankpa, organized by the people of Isuikwuato Local Government Area.

He explained that the power plant project is part of the state’s broader efforts to improve infrastructure and create a more conducive environment for academic productivity at ABSU.

Otti further noted that the project is made possible by the newly signed Abia State Electricity Law, which grants the state the authority to undertake independent power initiatives without requiring federal approval.

“This initiative will enhance academic productivity at ABSU and improve power supply in Uturu,” Otti said.

The 10-megawatt plant will provide reliable electricity, alleviating the power challenges faced by the university and the local community, which has long struggled with inconsistent power supply.

In addition to the power project, Governor Otti revealed plans for the rehabilitation of key roads in the state.

The Amibo-Acha and Eziama-Ndundu roads will soon be rehabilitated, further improving access and connectivity within the region. These infrastructure projects are part of Otti’s commitment to delivering essential services that drive economic growth and improve the quality of life for residents.

The event also turned into a significant political gathering, with key political figures, including Hon. Amobi Ogah and Speaker Emmanuel Emeruwa, publicly endorsing Otti for a second term. They lauded him as a transformational leader who has delivered progress in education, healthcare, and infrastructure.

In a notable political development, Hon. Lucky Johnson officially joined the Labour Party at the event. Johnson’s defection, along with the mass movement of members from the PDP, APGA, and AA, further solidifies the Labour Party’s position in Isuikwuato.

This shift is seen as a clear indication of growing support for Otti’s leadership and his re-election bid.

Other dignitaries present, including Attorney General Barr. Ikechukwu Uwanna, Mayor of Isuikwuato Hon. Chinedu Ekeke, and Hon. Uche Maduako, commended Otti for his strides in governance, particularly in the areas of education, healthcare, infrastructure, and workers’ welfare.

Prominent figures from Isuikwuato and Uturu, including Dr. Onyinyechi Rufus-Obi, Mr. Ken Ahia (SAN), Dr. Chidi Mba, and Chief Chidiebere Uguru, also praised the Governor’s performance and pledged their continued support.

The event marked a significant moment in the political landscape of Abia State, strengthening Otti’s position as the preferred choice for a second term in office.

The unveiling of the 10-megawatt Independent Power Plant at ABSU represents a critical step in addressing the power supply challenges that have hindered development in the region.

It is expected to enhance the university’s academic performance and contribute to the overall economic growth of the state.
