President Bola Tinubu has commended Jim Ovia, Founder and Chairman of Zenith Bank Plc, following his formal admission to the Freedom of the City of London, one of the United Kingdom’s most historic civic recognitions.
In a statement released by the Presidency, Tinubu described Ovia’s recognition as a reflection of his contributions to Nigeria’s financial sector and his role in expanding the reach of Nigerian enterprise globally.
The President noted that the honour affirms the impact of Ovia’s leadership in banking, innovation, and financial inclusion across Africa.
The Freedom of the City of London is traditionally granted to individuals with notable contributions to commerce, finance, and public service.
Ovia, a leading figure in Nigeria’s banking sector for over three decades, was acknowledged for his influence in shaping Nigeria’s financial landscape and advancing business and economic relations between Africa and global markets.
President Tinubu highlighted Ovia’s pioneering role in modernizing Nigeria’s banking industry through the establishment and growth of Zenith Bank, which has consistently ranked among Nigeria’s leading financial institutions.
“This honour is a testament to your unwavering commitment to excellence, your pioneering role in the growth of the financial services sector in Nigeria, and your visionary leadership that continues to inspire generations,” President Tinubu said.
The President also noted that the recognition underscores the relevance of Nigerian professionals in the global financial ecosystem and the importance of innovation-led development in sustaining competitiveness.
Industry analysts have consistently ranked Ovia among Nigeria’s most influential corporate leaders, citing his contributions to corporate governance, banking reforms, and financial sector development.
Under his leadership, Zenith Bank has expanded its footprint beyond Nigeria into key regional markets and maintained its position as one of Africa’s top-tier banks by assets and profitability.
President Tinubu described Ovia as a key figure in Nigeria’s private sector and commended his continued contributions to national development.
The President expressed confidence that Ovia’s recognition would further encourage Nigerian entrepreneurs and corporate leaders to maintain global standards and drive innovation across sectors.
