Nigeria’s power sector has recorded a new peak generation of 5,543.20 megawatts (MW), the highest electricity output for 2025, the Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) announced on Friday.
The latest milestone surpassed the previous peak of 5,478.73MW recorded just a day earlier on Thursday.
The achievement also set a new Maximum Daily Energy record of 125,159.48 megawatt-hours (MWH), exceeding the previous high of 121,674.88MWH on February 7 by 3,484.60MWH.
According to TCN, the company successfully transmitted the increased power generation to distribution companies nationwide and ensured improved electricity supply to consumers.
“This achievement underscores the commitment of President Ahmed Bola Tinubu’s administration and the Minister of Power, Chief Adebayo Adelabu, to elevating Nigeria’s power generation and supply,” the agency said in a statement.
The new milestone signals progress in stabilizing Nigeria’s electricity sector, which has struggled with inconsistent generation, transmission bottlenecks, and distribution challenges. While peak generation capacity continues to improve, sector analysts caution that sustained investment in grid infrastructure and generation capacity expansion will be essential to achieving long-term energy stability.
Nigeria’s power demand remains significantly higher than current generation levels, with ongoing efforts to boost capacity through initiatives such as grid modernization projects and increased private sector participation.
The latest figures, however, showed gradual progress in the sector with authorities optimistic about continued growth.
As TCN works to maintain stability in the national grid, stakeholders anticipate further improvements in generation output and electricity distribution.
