The Nigerian Immigration Service (NIS) has launched a new contactless passport application system that allows Nigerians to apply, submit biometric data, and make payments online without visiting an immigration office.

The new system is designed to simplify the passport application process and improve efficiency by reducing the need for in-person interactions.

The initiative aligns with the government’s ongoing efforts to digitize public services and enhance accessibility for citizens both within Nigeria and abroad.

Under the updated system, applicants can complete the entire process through the official NIS passport application app, available on the Google Play Store.

The digital workflow enables users to create a profile, apply for a passport, pay required fees and submit biometric data remotely.

How the New System Works

To begin, applicants must download the NIS passport application app and register with a valid email address. Once logged in, they can access the “passport application services” tab and select the self-enrollment option.

Payment for the passport is made within the app after which an application ID and reference number are issued. These credentials are required for the next step—contactless biometric enrollment.

Eligible applicants can submit their biometric data directly through the app.

However, those who do not meet the criteria for remote enrollment will need to schedule an appointment for in-person biometric capture via the NIS passport portal at passport.immigration.gov.ng.

Following successful biometric submission, applicants must mail their current passport, along with a self-addressed envelope to the appropriate immigration office or embassy.

Once processed, the new passport will be sent to the provided address.

The NIS has assured that applicants will receive their passports within the stipulated timeframe.

Enhancing Efficiency and Accessibility

The introduction of the contactless passport system is a step toward modernising public service delivery in Nigeria.

By reducing bureaucratic bottlenecks and eliminating unnecessary office visits, the NIS aims to provide a more seamless experience for citizens.

The system is particularly beneficial for Nigerians in the diaspora, who previously faced long wait times and logistical challenges when renewing or applying for passports.
