EKEDC Distributes Free Prepaid Meters to Address Metering Gap

Eko Electricity Distribution Company (EKEDC) has commenced the distribution of free prepaid meters to Band A customers within its coverage areas under the Meter Acquisition Fund (MAF) scheme.

The initiative is part of the company’s broader strategy to close the metering gap and improve service delivery.

EKEDC’s General Manager, Mr. Babatunde Lasaki, confirmed this in a statement on Monday in Lagos, emphasizing the company’s commitment to metering eligible customers within the stipulated 60-day timeline.

“We encourage all Band A customers with faulty or obsolete meters to visit our website and apply for a replacement at no cost. If you are a postpaid customer in any of our Band A feeders, please apply, and we will ensure you are metered immediately,” Lasaki said.

According to Lasaki, the MAF scheme runs concurrently with the Meter Asset Provider (MAP) scheme. While the MAP scheme allows customers to purchase meters with reimbursement over time, the MAF scheme is a federal government initiative aimed at providing prepaid meters at no cost to Band A customers.

“Although the MAF scheme currently applies to Band A customers, future tranches will extend to our broader customer base,” he added.

Lasaki commended the Federal Government for its continued efforts to bridge the metering gap and enhance the overall efficiency of the power sector.

“EKEDC remains at the forefront of technological innovation, customer experience, and service excellence. We are proud of our leadership in the electricity distribution sector, as reflected by our top rankings in several performance indicators set by the electricity market regulator,” he said.

The MAF initiative, launched under the Presidential Metering Initiative (PMI), is designed to address metering challenges and ensure transparency in electricity billing. The program is overseen by the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC) and seeks to replace faulty meters while transitioning postpaid customers to prepaid systems.

As the distribution progresses, customers are urged to take advantage of the opportunity by applying for their free prepaid meters, ensuring a more accurate and fair billing system.
