The Lagos State House of Assembly has reaffirmed the removal of Mudashiru Obasa as Speaker, maintaining that the process was conducted lawfully in accordance with constitutional provisions.

In a statement signed by Hon. Ogundipe Stephen Olukayode on Thursday, lawmakers reiterated that the decision adhered strictly to the 1999 Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria and the Powers and Privileges Act. The assembly cited Sections 92 and 96, which outline the procedures for electing and removing a Speaker, stressing that due process was followed in Obasa’s ouster.

“The Lagos State House of Assembly, as an independent arm of government, exercised its constitutional duty in the best interest of the people of Lagos,” the lawmakers stated.

“Any attempt to challenge this lawful action undermines the authority granted to us by the Nigerian Constitution.”

The statement followed a meeting between the lawmakers and the Department of State Services (DSS) Lagos Command in Shangisha, where assembly members engaged with security officials over the decision.

The lawmakers commended the DSS for its professionalism, confirming that all detained members had been released following a smooth and respectful engagement.

Obasa was removed as Speaker by 35 out of 40 members of the assembly on January 13, 2025, over allegations of misconduct and mismanagement of funds. The embattled ex-speaker was immediately replaced by his former Deputy, Rt. Hon. Mojisola Lawal-Meranda.

The Lagos Assembly reiterated its commitment to legislative responsibilities and urged all stakeholders—including the executive and the public—to respect the sanctity of the legislative process and avoid undue interference.

They further revealed that the removal of Obasa was a necessary step to uphold legislative integrity and public trust.
