The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) has declared a nationwide protest against the recent tariff hike by telecommunication companies.
The labour union said it is unfair to burden Nigerians with additional financial responsibilities despite rising inflation.
In a communique issued after its National Administrative Council meeting on Wednesday, the labour union announced that the protest would take place on Tuesday, February 4, across major cities in the country.
According to the NLC, the demonstration is aimed at warning against what it described as an unfair increase in telecom tariffs, particularly at a time when the minimum wage remains at ₦70,000.
The union condemned the tariff hike, highlighting the cumulative economic strain on citizens who are already dealing with high fuel prices, soaring food costs and increased electricity tariffs.
“The rally will warn of the dangers of imposing such an unfair increase on a struggling population earning a minimum wage of only ₦70,000,” the communique stated.
The NLC also expressed concern over the continuous rise in the cost of living, arguing that Nigerians should not be subjected to further financial pressure from telecom operators.
The labour movement has urged the government and industry regulators to intervene and halt what it described as an exploitative policy that disproportionately affects low-income earners and businesses reliant on digital communication.
The planned demonstration signals growing discontent over economic policies perceived as unfavorable to workers and ordinary citizens.
As the date for the protest draws closer, expectations are mounting over how the authorities and telecom companies will respond to the demands of the labour union.
