Oba Gbadebo Resigns as Oando Chairman After 18 Years, Akinrele Takes Over

Oando PLC has announced changes to its Board of Directors following the resignation of His Royal Majesty, Oba Adedotun Gbadebo, CFR, the Alake of Egbaland, as Chairman after 18 years of distinguished service.

Oba Gbadebo, who has been an integral part of Oando’s leadership, stepped down from his position following the conclusion of the company’s Annual General Meeting (AGM) held on December 17, 2024.

During his tenure, Oba Gbadebo played a pivotal role in guiding the company through several landmark transactions and moments of transformation.

His leadership was characterised by steady guidance, a wealth of wisdom and a fatherly presence that steered the company through both challenges and growth opportunities.

In a statement issued by Oando PLC, the Board and Management expressed their deep appreciation for Oba Gbadebo’s leadership over the years.

His resignation marks the end of an era at Oando with the company acknowledging his legacy as a cornerstone of its history.

“We extend our sincere appreciation to His Royal Majesty, Oba Adedotun Gbadebo, for his remarkable contributions and leadership over the years. His legacy will forever be an integral part of Oando’s story,” the statement read.

Appointment of Mr. Ademola Akinrele, SAN

The Board and Management are confident that the transition will be smooth with a strong foundation laid for the future. As part of this transition, Oando PLC has appointed Mr. Ademola Akinrele, SAN, as the new Chairman of the Board, effective immediately following the AGM. Mr. Akinrele, who has previously served as a Non-Executive Director and Chairman of the Governance & Nominations Committee, brings decades of experience to his new role.

Mr. Akinrele is recognised for his expertise in commercial law, litigation, aviation, and maritime matters, and has served on the boards of numerous notable organizations, including Agip Plc and Danos & Curole Marine Contractors.

His legal acumen, leadership, and ability to bring stakeholders together make him a strong choice to lead Oando into its next phase of growth.

“I am honored to have been appointed as Chairman of Oando PLC. I look forward to building on the solid foundation left by His Royal Majesty and leading Oando towards greater success and sustainability,” said Mr. Akinrele, expressing his excitement for the future.

In addition to the appointment of Mr. Akinrele, Oando also welcomed Mr. Cosmas Iwueze as an Independent Non-Executive Director. Mr. Iwueze brings over three decades of experience in the oil and gas industry, having held leadership positions at Chevron Nigeria Limited.

His expertise in reservoir and asset management, commercial development, and strategic leadership will be an invaluable asset to Oando as it continues to navigate the complexities of the energy sector.

Oando PLC’s Board and Management expressed their appreciation for the outgoing Chairman, Oba Gbadebo, and extended a warm welcome to Mr. Akinrele and Mr. Iwueze in their new roles.
