The Governor of Benue State, Hyacinth Alia has revealed that his administration has paid N4.53 billion out of the 350 billion debts he inherited from the previous administration.
In a statement to Investors King, signed by the State Chief Press Secretary, Sir Tersoo Kula, in Makurdi, the Benue State capital, on Monday, December 9, Governor Alia reiterated his administration’s commitment to reducing the heavy debt burden placed on the state by his predecessor.
The Governor disclosed that the N4.53 billion payment covers external loans between June 2023 and June 2024, stressing that the state has not borrowed funds since the inception of his administration.
Alia lauded his administration’s efforts towards the crash of the state’s debt profile, according to a latest report by the Debt Management Office.
Highlighting the achievements of his administration, he said, “Recall that having inherited over 350 billion in debts from the previous administration, the administration has been cautious about taking loans, despite initiating numerous projects across the state, with many already completed.”
He emphasized his position regarding good governance and promised to deliver the same to the people.
“We are changing the narrative for good governance and massively delivering dividends of democracy to the people. We are consistent in insisting that the future of the state comes first and has demonstrated the highest level of decision-making and resource management,” he remarked.
The Governor expressed satisfaction that Benue State, under his watch ranks nine in the BudgIT release of the third quarter of 2024, States Fiscal Transparency League Table, from the 35th and 36th positions it shuffled since 2015.
