A former Governor of Kogi State, Yahaya Bello is in the custody of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) after he honoured the invitation of the anti-graft agency over alleged misappropriation of funds.
Recall that some months back, Bello honoured an invitation after earlier invading arrests by going with his ally and current Governor of Kogi State, Usman Ododo.
The EFCC refused to process him due to the interference of the Governor.
However, today he was without his political alibi as he drove in a black Hilux to the EFCC office with his lawyers.
This development followed the Supreme Court judgment which dismissed states’ case on the constitutionality of the anti-graft agency.
There were insinuations last week that he was going to visit the EFCC but the former governor’s media aides did not respond to enquiries on the information.
At the last hearing held on November 14, the EFCC had sought adjournment to Wednesday, November 27 in the fresh case it instituted against Bello, saying the 30-day window was still running for the summons earlier issued.
The EFCC, however, admitted his co-defendants, Umar Oricha and Abdulsalami Hudu, to administrative bail and prayed to the court for an extension of time for the 1st Defendant to appear.
Recall that in April, the EFCC declared Bello wanted after he reportedly ignored a series of invitations and resisted arrest.
EFCC officials had stormed Bello’s residence in Abuja to arrest him, but there was a stalemate as they couldn’t gain access to his living room.
After hours of being unable to secure their mission, the security operatives reinforced with backup support from the Police and Department of State Services (DSS).
Then, Governor Ododo stepped in to defend his predecessor leading to a brief gun battle, but the embattled Bello was able to escape and the EFCC operatives left empty handed.
