The Nigerian Exchange Limited (NGX) opened the month of November in the red as economic uncertainty amid local currency redesign ahead of the 2023 general election continues to cloud investment sentiment.

Stock investors transacted 172,866,016 shares valued at N4.014 billion in 4,110 deals during the trading hours of Tuesday. Access Bank was the most traded stock with 24,681,098 shares worth N194,142,491.85 exchanging hands. Sterling Bank, Transcorp, UBA and Zenith Bank followed with 21,971871, 15,219,833, 13,575,595 and 9,566,765 shares valued at N31.129 million; N16.155 million; N95.821 million and N191.798 million, respectively.

Breaking down key sectors, the banking sector appreciated by 7 basis points (bps) on the back of a 1.05% gain in the value of Jaiz Bank and 0.24% in Fidelity Bank. Sterling bank, Unity Bank and UBA closed in the red.

The industrial sector also improved by 133bps on a 2.86% appreciation in BUA Cement and another 1.99% in Cutix.

The oil and gas sector lost 431bps as Seplat dipped by 8.33% while the consumer goods shed 158bps on the decline in the worth of BUA Foods and Cadbury. Honey Flour, however, recorded a 3.29% gain.

The market value of listed equities declined to N23.827 trillion while the NGX All-share index lost 0.21% to settle at 43,745.73 index points.

The Exchange’s year-to-date moderated to 2.41% as a total of 14 stocks gained points against 20 stocks that lost points. See details of top gainers and losers below.
