Jumia, Other Renowned Businesses Partner to Excite Customers

Jumia Nigeria, Africa’s largest e-commerce company, has partnered with other renowned brands to offer customers exciting deals with over 80 percent discounts during this year’s Black Friday.

According to Mr. Massimiliano Spalazzi, Jumia Nigeria, CEO, the partnership will provide support for brands and local small businesses affected by COVID-19 to catch up on sales and moderate losses due to the lockdown that eroded business profitability.

Listing some of the brands, the online market store said Standard Chartered Bank, Samsung, Pernod Ricard, Unilever, Reckitt Benckiser, Intel, Defacto, Umidigi, Michelin, Stanbic IBTC, and others.

Spalazzi said “Aside businesses, the consumers too were affected by the lockdown, as some lost their income, others prioritised only essential products, and the purchasing power of many was cut by half.

“To support these consumers, we have democratised the prices of products on our marketplace by onboarding more competitive sellers; negotiated thousands of exciting deals with as many partners as possible to enable consumers to buy more with less, and increased our assortment 100 per cent which provides a wide pool of similar products at varying prices for consumers to choose from,” he added.

Speaking on the partnership, the Head of Corporate Affairs, Brand and Marketing, Nigeria and West Africa, Dayo Aderugbo, said “We are excited about this partnership with Jumia because of the immense reward opportunities it provides to our existing and new clients.

For us, initiatives like these are one of the many ways we reiterate our commitment to and appreciation of our stakeholders. We are always Here for their progress, and truly Here for good.”

Naira Depreciation Pushes Import Duty Costs Up by 23%

Amidst the ongoing economic turbulence in Nigeria, the depreciation of the Naira has inflicted a significant blow to businesses and importers.

The latest casualty is the surge in import duty costs which have skyrocketed by 23% due to the weakening of the national currency against the United States dollar.

The cost of clearing imports has surged to N1,412.573/$ as of May 8, an increase from the year-to-date low of N1,150.16/$ recorded on April 23.

This sudden spike in import duty costs reflects a 48% surge compared to the rate recorded in January.

The surge in import duty costs comes as a result of the fluctuation in the exchange rate between the Naira and the US dollar.

While the Naira experienced a brief rally in April, providing some relief to importers, the recent depreciation has erased those gains and compounded the financial strain on businesses.

Jonathan Nicole, former president of the Shippers Association of Lagos State, voiced concerns over the destabilizing effect of the fluctuating import duty rates on importers.

He criticized the lack of consistency in Nigeria’s economic policies and said there is a need for stability to attract investments and foster economic growth.

In response to the escalating import duty costs, stakeholders in the business community have called for urgent intervention to mitigate the adverse impact on businesses.

The surge in import duty costs poses a significant challenge to manufacturers and importers, particularly those who had already incurred expenses in anticipation of stable exchange rates.

As the cost of doing business continues to rise, there are growing concerns about the long-term viability of businesses and the potential impact on Nigeria’s economy.

With the economic landscape fraught with uncertainties, stakeholders are urging the government and regulatory authorities to implement measures aimed at stabilizing the currency and creating a conducive environment for businesses to thrive.

Ebenezer Olufowose Takes Helm at First Bank of Nigeria Limited as Chairman

First Bank of Nigeria Limited has announced the appointment of Mr. Ebenezer Olufowose as its new Chairman.

This significant change follows the completion of the tenure of Mr. Tunde Hassan-Odukale, in accordance with the Central Bank of Nigeria’s Corporate Governance Guidelines, which mandates a maximum of twelve years for a Non-Executive Director.

Mr. Olufowose, a seasoned veteran in the financial services industry, brings over 36 years of experience to his new role.

He assumes the position of Chairman with a wealth of expertise garnered from his diverse background in Corporate Finance, Project Finance, and Investment Banking.

Prior to his appointment as Chairman, Mr. Olufowose served as a Non-Executive Director on the Board of First Bank of Nigeria Limited, a position he held since April 29, 2021.

Manufacturers Grapple with Losses Amid Economic Strain

In the first three months of 2024, some of Nigeria’s major manufacturers found themselves navigating treacherous waters as financial losses mounted amidst economic turbulence.

According to data compiled by BusinessDay, rising interest rates and a further devaluation of the naira contributed to the woes of these industrial giants.

The latest financial reports from 13 listed consumer goods firms paint a grim picture, with seven of them collectively recording a staggering loss of N388.6 billion in Q1.

Names such as International Breweries Plc, Cadbury Nigeria Plc, and Nigerian Breweries Plc were among those that bore the brunt of the downturn.

On the flip side, a few companies managed to buck the trend. BUA Foods Plc, Unilever Nigeria Plc, and Dangote Cement Plc reported a combined profit of N171.9 billion, showcasing resilience amidst the challenging economic landscape.

While the overall revenue of these manufacturers saw an impressive 79 percent increase to N2.27 trillion, it was overshadowed by soaring financing costs.

In Q1 alone, finance costs skyrocketed to N616.5 billion from N65.8 billion in the same period in 2023.

Analysts attribute these mounting losses to the confluence of factors, including the devaluation of the naira and escalating interest rates. With the naira experiencing nearly a 30 percent devaluation this year alone, coupled with a 40 percent devaluation last June, companies faced intensified pressure on their margins.

Moreover, the Central Bank of Nigeria’s decision to raise the monetary policy rate to 24.75 percent in March further exacerbated the situation.

This marked the second consecutive increase, following a 400 basis points hike in February, aimed at curbing inflation.

The adverse effects of these economic headwinds were felt across various sectors. Nestle reported the highest finance cost of N218.8 billion, followed closely by Dangote Cement and Dangote Sugar Refinery.

Commenting on the challenging business environment, Uaboi Agbebaku, the company secretary at Nigerian Breweries, highlighted how increased interest rates and FX volatility led to a staggering 391 percent rise in net losses compared to the same quarter in 2023.

Looking ahead, manufacturers remain cautiously optimistic but vigilant. Thabo Mabe, managing director at NASCON, emphasized the importance of navigating the turbulent waters while executing robust strategies to ensure sustained growth.

As Nigeria grapples with economic uncertainties, the resilience of its manufacturing sector will play a pivotal role in shaping the nation’s economic trajectory.

However, concerted efforts from both the public and private sectors will be needed to steer the industry towards stability and growth.
