Aella, a Nigerian fintech startup, has partnered with Hygeia HMO, a health insurance provider, to provide health insurance for millions of Nigerians outside the healthcare system.

In a statement released by the company, the current global health crisis has shown how broken the Nigerian health sector and the entire West African region is, therefore, it is important to embark on a broad inclusive health insurance policy that protects Nigerians and West Africans.

Akin Oyebode, the special adviser to Ekiti State governor, had said: “The one thing I hope we realise with this crisis is how criminally underfunded our healthcare infrastructure is, both public and private.”

Aella, which recently raised a $10 million funding round, said the new partnership called AellaCare will attempt to close the current gap in the health insurance industry with an affordable coverage of N2,000 or $5 per month.

According to the company, affordability will make it easier for Nigerians to patronise health services like general consultation, pharmacy benefits, ante-natal care, and delivery services; accidents and emergencies; surgeries; outpatient and specialist consultations; HIV/AIDS Care and treatment; dental care; prescription glasses; family planning services among others.

“With AellaCare, we are not only reducing the financial barriers that prevent people from protecting their health with decent health insurance; we are also transforming the unbanked and supporting economic growth for all West Africans,” Akin Jones, CEO Aella stated in the statement.

“This milestone is another validation of our commitment to lifting many out of poverty and transition emerging markets into the digital economy through accessible financial solutions.”

Commenting on the partnership, Obinna Abajue, the CEO, Hygeia HMO, said quality and affordable health care service should not be a luxury, adding it was the reason the company partner with Aella to sell provision of healthcare services to Nigerians and West Africans outside the healthcare system.

He said: “With quality healthcare insurance coverage, AellaCare is giving people the convenience of providing preventive and primary care services for them and their loved ones, which reduces the financial risk of ill health.”

“All lives matter and AellaCare has made it easier to access healthcare through Aella’s fast, simple and affordable monthly subscription services,” Abajue stated.
