The total number of confirmed coronavirus cases rose to 40 on Monday, according to the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control (NCDC).

The centre had announced an additional four new cases on Monday to take the total number of confirmed cases from 36 to 40.

COVID19Two of the new cases were returning travellers while three of the cases were confirmed in Lagos, the remaining one was in the Federal Capital Territory, the centre tweeted @NCDCgov.

“Four new cases of #COVID19 have been confirmed in Nigeria. 3 are in Lagos State and 1 in FCT,” NCDC stated in a tweet.

“As at 11:00 pm on the 23rd of March, there are 40 confirmed cases of #COVID19 in Nigeria. 2 have been discharged with 1 death recorded.”

Nigeria on Monday confirmed its very first death of the virus when Suleiman Achimugu, a 67-year old former managing director of Pipeline and Products Marketing Company, a subsidiary of the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation, died shortly after returning from the United Kingdom two weeks ago and tested positive to the virus.
