JAMB Holds Mop-Up UTME for Candidates Who Missed Exams August 8
The Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) has scheduled a mop-up Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examinations (UTME) on Friday, August 6, 2021, for candidates who missed the examinations due to registration and verification difficulties, and clash of timetables, among others.
The board in a statement on Thursday disclosed that a total of 18,000 candidates are slated to write the examinations in some selected locations across the country.
JAMB said the decision to conduct the examination follows a detailed investigation and careful analysis of the 2021 UTME, and with due consultation with the National Examination Council (NECO) concerning the timetable of the council’s ongoing SSCE.
The rescheduled candidates are in the following categories:
Candidates who could not be initially scheduled for examination owing to their inability to timely procure and supply their mandatory NINs or profile codes until after the close of the registration exercise and, therefore, had to purchase Bank Drafts ( as against the usual vending of PINs) after the scheduled period for the examination and were later registered.
Few candidates who encountered peculiar biometric verification problems, or who failed biometric verification on the examination date ( and were recaptured) but were not allowed to partake in the examination.
The board said adequate screening arrangements have been made to reverify such claims and any candidate found to be involved in any form of impersonation will be identified for prosecution.
Candidates who were unable to sit for the UTME owing to the clash of timetables of the UTME and the then ongoing NABTEB examinations and whose particulars have been verified and supplied directly to JAMB by NABTEB, and
Candidates who have been ascertained by JAMB to have experienced genuine rescheduling/technical problems as was the case in 30 of the 760 centres used for the examination.
The rescheduled candidates have been directed to print fresh examination notification slips containing the venue and time of the examination from the JAMB website using the candidates’ registration number from Sunday, 1st August 2021.
“In addition, the candidate can check using their registration number here
“For the avoidance of doubt, no candidate whose result has been duly released will be rescheduled for another examination contrary to the sponsored fake news being circulated on the social (and few mischievous conventional) media”, the board stated.
The board further advised candidates to avoid supplying their vital information including registration numbers to fraudsters who abound especially in cybercafes (s), tutorial centres springing up almost everywhere in the nation as a result of the illicit activities of examination syndicates.
“CBT centres approved by JAMB which are consistently monitored are relatively more secure for printing examination notification slips by candidates who cannot print such on their own”, the board said.
8.2 Magnitude Earthquake Hits Alaska USA, Triggering Warnings
Thousands scramble to clear out of coastal towns after massive 8.2magnitude earthquake strikes in the Gulf of Alaska triggering tsunami warnings and even the aftershocks measured 6.2.
Families are scrambling to clear out of coastal towns after a powerful 8.2 magnitude earthquake has struck off the coast of Alaska, triggering a tsunami warning.
The shallow quake hit 56 miles (91 kilometers) southeast of the town of Perryville, the United States Geological Survey (USGS) said, with a tsunami warning in effect for south Alaska and the Alaskan peninsula.
The USGS said the quake, which struck at 10:15 p.m. local time (0615 GMT Thursday), was at a depth of 29 miles.
The US government issued a tsunami warning for Alaska’s southeast, while authorities in Hawaii also issued a tsunami watch, but later cancelled the warning.
‘Hazardous tsunami waves for this earthquake are possible within the next three hours along some coasts,’ the US Tsunami Warning System said in a statement.
Alaska Governor Mike Dunleavy tweeted that the state’s emergency operation center had been activated and authorities were contacting communities in the tsunami warning areas.
Perryville is a small village about 500 miles from Anchorage, Alaska’s biggest city.
Tsunami warning sirens could be heard on Kodiak, an island with a population of about 6,000 people, along Alaska’s coastline. Perryville is home to just 113.
Five aftershocks were recorded within 90 minutes of the earthquake, the largest with a magnitude of 6.2, according to the USGS.
An emergency alert sent to people’s phones read: ‘The National Weather Service has issued a TSUNAMI WARNING.
‘A series of powerful waves and strong currents may impact coasts near you. You are in danger. Get away from coastal waters. Move to high ground or inland now. Keep away from the coast until local officials say it is safe to return.’
A broadcaster on local radio station KMXT said a tsunami, if it was generated, would hit Kodiak at 11:55 pm.
Videos posted on social media by journalists and residents in Kodiak showed people driving away from the coast as warning sirens could be heard.
Cross River Launches Cally Air, A State-Owned Airline
The Cross River State Government has launched its airline, Cally Air, as part of efforts to boost economic activities in the state and across the country.
Governor Ben Ayade on Monday welcomed the maiden flight of the airline into Margaret Ekpo International Airport in Calabar, the state capital.
Addressing journalists after the reception, he explained that it was a dream the government had in 2017, occasioned by the high influx of traffic into Calabar and the monopoly of some airlines dominating the Calabar route.
“Cally Air belongs to Cross River State. No loan, no facilities were obtained and it is one hundred percent property of the citizens of Cross River State,” he said.
“I don’t own it, aero contractors do not own it. No one has a percentage share. The recruitment was done by aero contractors, but we have a responsibility to ensure that the sensitivity and ethnic differences in Cross River are reflected.”
The airline comes with a fare of N17,000 for a trip from Abuja to Calabar, a relatively cheaper fare compared to the industry average fare of between N35,000 and N40,000.
Mr Ayade advised Cross Riverians to patronise the airline, noting that “Cally Air is actually intended to serve Cross Riverians. It is for you, Cross Riverians.”
The governor, who said the airline will make punctuality the soul of its business, also disclosed that “when we say Cally Air operates on the dot, we mean it will be prompt, it will be apt, it will be time conscious to ensure that Cross Riverians can go to Abuja, do their business and return the same day to save them the cost of hotel bills.”
He explained further: “Your money is there, my money is there, all of our taxes have come to the achievement of this. There is no bank loan and I am saying it on camera for emphasis, no bank here or abroad that will say Cross River borrowed 10kobo. There is no one that will say we borrowed one naira.
“It takes six months for the license to come and if we have to wait for the license, we will be losing money, so that is why we had to start early, using aero contractors with over 56 years of flying without any accident.
However, the governor said the state chose aero contractors to assist in the management of the airline.
“So on the basis of safety, we made a choice of aero contractors and against that background, we will continue with them until Cally Air has its full management team and a full AOC,” he said.
“So after the AOC, we can now commence a full direct independent airline.”
