- Coronavirus: Visa On Arrival Drops by 40%
The number of tourists visiting Nigeria has dropped since the coronavirus outbreak, a report has shown.
The total number of visas on arrival issued at the Murtala Muhammed International Airport in Lagos dropped by 39.8 percent from 440 in January to 265 in February. This represents a decline of 175 or 39.8 percent in just one month.
Since the nation’s ministry of health announced the very first case of coronavirus in February, the number of tourists visiting the country has continued to drop.
The virus has killed more than 5000 people across the world and infected more than 100,000 people globally. The World Health Organisation on Wednesday declared the virus a global pandemic with the US and other nations restricting flights from certain regions to contain the spread of the virus.
While, Nigeria has been able to contain the spread of the virus, South Africa and other African nations are struggling with new cases of coronavirus. Infected people in South Africa and Morocco rose to 38 and 17, respectively. Somalia, Tanzania, Ethiopia, Rwanda, etc have confirmed their first cases.
The S&P 500 tumbled by 8 percent on Monday due to rising global uncertainty and risk, forcing the regulator to shut down the market for 15 minutes. Dow Jones opened lower by 1,000 points while oil and Bitcoin extended their declines as well.
