Paypal Inc has officially pulled out of Facebook’s cryptocurrency project, Libra, amid rising regulatory scrutiny and opposition.

Paypal was one of the companies that invested at least $10 million in the project when it was unveiledĀ earlier this year, however, none of them anticipated the level of opposition and scrutiny that trailed the announcement.

Regulators across the world are worried about trusting Facebook with financial details of their citizens following its failure to protect users’ data in the past and its reluctant to even report the stolen data.

The 29 companies that initially signed up for the project are now sceptical, and with Paypal out, others may start pulling out to limit regulatory scrutiny and negative impact on their overall branding.

A move that could hurt the entire project as Facebook would lose more bargaining power and its ability to convince regulators that the project is a collective effort and not a move to monopolise global financial service.

In a statement released by Paypal, the company decided to focus on advancing its existing mission and business priorities.

ā€œPayPal has made the decision to forgo further participation in the Libra Association at this time and to continue to focus on advancing our existing mission and business priorities as we strive to democratize access to financial services for underserved populations,ā€ PayPal said in an emailed statement to TechCrunch. ā€œWe remain supportive of Libraā€™s aspirations and look forward to continued dialogue on ways to work together in the future. Facebook has been a longstanding and valued strategic partner to PayPal, and we will continue to partner with and support Facebook in various capacities.ā€

Earlier this week, WSJ reported that Mastercard, Visa and other companies may also pull out ahead of the scheduled meeting to elect the first board of directors for the project this month in Geneva.

Facebook, however, responded to the Paypal announcement: ā€œIt requires a certain boldness and fortitude to take on an endeavor as ambitious as Libra ā€“ a generational opportunity to get things right and improve financial inclusion,ā€ said a spokesperson. ā€œThe journey will be long and challenging. The type of change that will reconfigure the financial system to be tilted towards people, not the institutions serving them, will be hard. Commitment to that mission is more important to us than anything else. Weā€™re better off knowing about this lack of commitment now, rather than later.ā€

The only CEO who has spoken regarding the project, Al Kelly, Visa, said: ā€œItā€™s important to understand the facts here and not any of us get out ahead of ourselves,ā€ Kelly said in the companyā€™s most recent earnings call. ā€œSo we have signed a nonbinding letter of intent to join Libra. Weā€™re one of ā€“ I think itā€™s 27 companies that have expressed that interest. So no one has yet officially joined. Weā€™re in discussions and our ultimate decision to join will be determined by a number of factors, including obviously the ability of the association to satisfy all the requisite regulatory requirementsā€¦ Itā€™s really, really early days and thereā€™s just a tremendous amount to be finalized. But obviously, given that weā€™ve expressed interest, we actually believe we could be additive and helpful in the association.ā€

Flutterwave Hit by Another Security Breach, Billions of Naira Diverted to Multiple Bank Accounts

In another blow to the financial technology sector, Flutterwave, a prominent player in Nigeria’s digital payment landscape, has been rocked by yet another security breach, resulting in the diversion of billions of naira to multiple undisclosed bank accounts.

This incident is the latest in a series of setbacks for the fintech company, raising concerns about the integrity of its systems and the safety of customer funds.

According to insider sources familiar with the matter, unauthorized transactions amounting to approximately ā‚¦11 billion ($7 million) were illicitly transferred to several accounts during April 2024.

However, other sources suggest the figure could be as high as ā‚¦20 billion ($13.5 million), underscoring the magnitude of the breach.

Flutterwave, responding to inquiries regarding the breach, acknowledged the unauthorized activities but stopped short of confirming the exact amount involved.

In a statement to TechCabal, the company assured the public that no customer funds were lost or compromised, and the confidentiality of customer data remained intact.

The modus operandi of the perpetrators involved transferring the stolen funds to various accounts across five financial institutions over a span of four days.

To evade detection, the transactions were carefully orchestrated to stay below thresholds that trigger fraud checks, highlighting the sophistication of the operation.

Law enforcement agencies have been notified of the breach, and investigations are underway to apprehend those responsible.

Flutterwave has also initiated measures to mitigate the impact of the incident, including temporarily restricting the accounts implicated in the unauthorized transfers.

Industry analysts note that this is not the first time Flutterwave has fallen victim to such security breaches. Over the past fourteen months, the company has grappled with multiple incidents of unauthorized transfers, raising serious concerns about the adequacy of its cybersecurity measures.

In October 2023, Flutterwave reported unauthorized transactions totaling ā‚¦19 billion ($24 million), affecting thousands of account holders across 35 banks and financial institutions.

Subsequent breaches in March and February 2023 saw millions of naira diverted to numerous bank accounts, further exposing vulnerabilities in the company’s systems.
