The aviation catering company are in for more problems as the Lagos State branch of the Nigerian Labour Congress (NLC) joins the National Union Of Air Transport Employees (NUATE) in protesting against them.

NUATE had accused Newrest ASL of illegal working conditions as well as other offences like the flippancy of the company in recognizing a registered trade union, the refusal to allow employees exercise their fundamental rights of free association, the unjust sanctioning of employees, the victimization of employees on the basis of joining and holding office in a trade union and other forms of dictatorship.

NUATE had notified all workers of the company last week to join the strike which began on the last day of May and had last week, started disturbing the activities of the aviation catering company and have vowed to continue escalating the actions against Newrest till the management of the company speaks with them.

The union, through their General Secretary, Mr Ocheme Aba, requests that the aviation company stops victimization of workers, revere Section 40 of the Nigerian constitution as well as reinstate union leaders who were relieved of their duties over a year ago.

Chairman of the NLC, Lagos Branch, Agnes Sessi also lent her voice in solidarity with the unions.
“Once we are united we can never be defeated. We will never give up until we achieve our aims and the management must treat the workers right”, she said.

Also in one accord with NUATE, members of the Nigeria Union Of Railway Workers were at the airport to offer support and their General Secretary, Segun Esan had this to say “The management is recalcitrant and this is a direct response to a breach as it concerns the welfare and well-being of workers.”

It is the belief of all parties involved that protest was ineludible as efforts to extract useful agreement, connections and relations with the management of the aviation catering company proved abortive.
