The Chartered Institute of Stockbrokers has highlighted some key strategic initiatives designed to attract students of higher institutions to the securities and investment profession in Nigeria.

The President, CIS, Mr Adedapo Adekoje, while speaking at the institute’s Annual General meeting in Lagos, said the CIS was poised to grow investor base through the encouragement of the youth to join the market.

According to him, today’s youths are the future investors and should be exposed to the culture of savings and investment.

Adekoje noted that activities such as career talks, debate competition, use of promotional videos, weekend revision classes and study packs would be provided to assist interested students.

He said, “To sensitise students to opportunities in the profession, the institute delivered career talks at Obafemi Awolowo University, Augustine University, Covenant University, University of Lagos, Kogi State University, University of Abuja, University of Nigeria and Nasarawa State University.

“In addition, a test run of the CIS Inter-Tertiary Institutions Debate Competition was held at the Obafemi Awolowo University. It recorded immense acceptance and success.”

He added that the institute also organised a one-day students’ forum in Lagos to create a platform for the interaction between it and examiners, tuition providers and students.

Adekoje explained that a temporary special window had been created for experienced academics, holders of CFA and CIIA qualifications and senior executives of regulatory agencies in the financial sector, including the Securities and Exchange Commission, the Central Bank of Nigeria, the Nigerian Stock Exchange, the Assets Management Corporation of Nigeria, and the National Pension Commission, among others.

He revealed that the institute secured a direct membership status of the Chartered Institute of Securities and Investment the United Kingdom, for stockbrokers in order to expand their professional horizon in the global capital market.

He urged stockbrokers to deploy their talents to support the institute in its efforts to implement an array of strategic plans to move the market to the next level.
