- INEC Declares Osun State Election Inconclusive; Sets September 27 for Rerun
The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) on Sunday declared Osun State gubernatorial election inconclusive, citing irregularities in some polling units.
Prof Joseph Fowape, INEC Returning Officer and Vice – Chancellor of the Federal University of Technology, Akure said candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party, Ademola Adeleke, received a total of 254,698 votes to defeat that of All Progressives Congress, Gboyega Oyetola, who polled 254,345 votes.
But due to irregularities in Ife North, Ife South and Orolu local government areas, including challenges faced with the card reader, ballot box snatching, and other difficulties, a total of 3,498 votes were cancelled.
Therefore, Fowape, who coordinated the activity of the commission, said because the margin between the two leading candidates was smaller than the cancelled votes, the commission will have to activate INEC’s Standing Rules and declare the election inconclusive.
He later announced Thursday, September 27, 2018, as a rerun date at the affected polling units.
