  • Buhari Approves N61.4bn for Kano Water, Agric Projects

President Muhammadu Buhari has approved N61.4bn for the development of water and agricultural facilities in Kano State, the Governor of Kano State, Abdullahi Ganduje, has disclosed.

Also, the Federal Government has signed a N12.7bn agreement with the Kano State Government in order to increase access to improved water supply, sanitation and hygiene for residents in rural communities in the state.

The N12.7bn agreement between the Federal Government and Kano State was signed at the headquarters of the Federal Ministry of Water Resources in Abuja.

Ganduje, whose speech at the event was obtained by our correspondent from the FMWR on Wednesday, signed for his state, while the Minister of Water Resources, Suleiman Adamu, signed on behalf of the Federal Government.

The governor thanked Buhari for approving $200m (N61.4bn at the official exchange rate of N307 to a dollar) for the development of Kano State.

“I would like to express our appreciation to President Muhammadu Buhari for approving development facilities of $200m with the Islamic Development Bank. The credit facility is for integrated water and agricultural development in the state,” Ganduje said.

On the agreement for water supply, he said, “The total volume of the partnership was in the region of N12.7bn, which is a big amount of money. This clearly shows the concern of Mr. President for our rural people who largely depend on hand pumps and motorised boreholes.

“We express the appreciation of the people of Kano State through the Minister of Water Resources, Suleiman Adamu, to the Federal Government.”

Adamu, in his address, stated that although it was the duty of state governments to provide potable water, the agreement with Kano was to complement the efforts of the state.

He said, “As we all know, provision of potable water supply is the primary responsibility of state governments. Today’s event is therefore to establish a partnership that will enable the Federal Government to complement the efforts of Kano State Government on WASH (Water, Sanitation and Hygiene) activities.”
