  • Power Grid Collapse Persists, Drops Twice in Two Months

Nigeria’s electricity grid is still witnessing system collapse as it recorded total failure twice in the last two months.

Figures obtained by our correspondent from the Federal Ministry of Power, Works and Housing in Abuja on Thursday showed that the system collapsed once in June and it recorded another in July.

In first month under review, the country’s total power on the grid dropped from a high of 3,659.5 megawatts on June 7 to as low as 41.4MW on June 8.

An analysis of the figures also showed that the lowest quantum of power on the grid on the first day of June 2018 was 3,445.4MW.

But this dropped by 574.5MW, as the month of June closed with the lowest generation figure of 2,870.5MW on June 30.

In the succeeding month, another collapse of the grid occurred on July 8 as the system dropped from a high of 4,089.1MW on July 7 to a low of 92.3MW the next day.

Further findings showed that the lowest generation figure on the first day of July was 2,609.3MW.

The month of July, however, closed on a high, in contrast to the preceding month, as the generation figure on July 31 was 3,355.8MW.

So far, no grid collapse has been recorded in August 2018, as findings showed that the country’s power generation figures hovered between a low of 3,000MW and a high of 4,800MW in the first eight days of the month.

Our correspondent also observed that the frequency in the collapse of Nigeria’s electricity grid witnessed a 57.14 per cent decrease in the second quarter of 2018 when compared to what was recorded in the first quarter of this year.

An analysis of the performance of the grid in the second quarter of 2018 showed some improvement in stability, as against what was witnessed in the previous quarter.

The grid collapsed seven times in the first quarter of 2018, but this reduced to three in the second quarter.

Findings showed that the country’s power generation system collapsed six times in the first eight days of 2018.

It also witnessed a collapse on the first day of February this year.

On February 5, 2018, the national electricity grid collapse from a high of 4,699.9MW on January 31, to 219MW on February 1.
