The Minister of Transportation, Rotimi Amaechi, who was recently appointed as an advisory board member of the United Nations Road Safety Trust Fund, on Thursday represented Nigeria and Africa at the inaugural meeting of the board at the UN Secretariat in Geneva, Switzerland.

The UNRSTF was established in April 2018 to address the worldwide accident crisis resulting in the loss of 1.3 million lives and additional 50 million injured on roads every year.

As a member of the UNRSTF advisory board, Amaechi will play an important part of collaborating with other members to help reduce the number of accidents and casualties in order to make an impact on global road safety.

These were disclosed by the Federal Ministry of Transportation in a statement issued in Abuja on Thursday.

It said the discussions and decisions at the meeting would greatly shape the operations of the UNRSTF.

The UNRSTF was established at the request of the UN Secretary–General, following suggestions made by several UN members states.

It is reportedly aimed to accelerate progress in improving global road safety by bridging the gap in the mobilisation of resources for effective action at all levels.

The ministry stated that the fund’s main objective was to mobilise resources from government, intergovernmental or non-governmental organisations and the private sector for immediate and effective action in any case.

It stated that since Amaechi resumed office in November 2015 as Minister of Transportation, there had been a renaissance in the Nigerian transportation system.

“And his involvement in the UNRSTF will bring about more intervention in the area of road safety in Nigeria and Africa,” the ministry said.
