  • Discos Distributed 93,219 Prepaid Meters in Q1

The total number of consumers with prepaid meters rose in the first quarter of the year by 6.23 percent to 1,589,805, up from 1,496,586 recorded in the final quarter of 2017.

According to the National Bureau of Statistics, the Benin Disco distributed 17.79 percent of the total meters, while Abuja Disco closely followed with 16.40 percent, Ibadan Disco 15.99 percent and Yola Disco recorded the least with 2.35 percent.

Average daily energy generation stood at 92,747 MWh in the quarter. Thermal stations reportedly generated 89,405 MWh of the total energy while the hydro stations generated 16,350 MWh.

The highest daily energy generation peaked at 105,755 MWh on the 14th of March 2018, however, the lowest was attained in the same month as thermal stations generated mere 14,357 MWh while no energy was generated from the hydro stations on the 20th of March 2018.

Almost five years after the sector was privatized, many consumers are yet to get a prepaid meter and had to deal with overestimated billing from distribution companies.

The Minister of Power, Works and Housing, Babatunde Fashola, who stated this at the 28th monthly meeting with the operators, said, “Estimated billings in this circumstance will become a major cause of distrust and conflict between consumers and the distribution companies, and meters are the easiest way to build the bridge of trust.”
