The Standards Organisation of Nigeria has carried out a public destruction of over 749 substandard LPG cylinders in Katsina State.

A statement quoted the Director-General, SON, Mr. Osita Aboloma, as saying that the withdrawal of the cylinders from circulation was in line with the SON Act No. 14 of 2015, which gave the organisation the powers to seize suspected substandard products for a period of 90 days in the first instance, for quality verification without recourse to judicial intervention.

The director general who was represented by the Regional Coordinator, North West-Zone, SON, Mr. Dauda Yakubu, was said to have disclosed that the cylinders had been subjected to laboratory tests and analyses, stressing that they failed critical safety parameters on construction, performance and marking.

He said, “Many have expired, while some supposedly new ones were badly welded, thus posing great danger to lives and property.”

On why the substandard cylinders were brought to Katsina for destruction, he said that there was a mutual agreement with the owners of the Dana Steel Rolling Mill facilities to assist in that respect and recycle them for other uses to avoid environmental pollution.

Meanwhile, the Managing Director of Ire Clay Products Nigeria Limited, Mr. Abiodun Adedeji, has described the issuance of the SON certificate to the firm as a boost to the production of Ire bricks.

He stated this during the presentation of the certificate to the company by the DG of SON, Aboloma, in Ire Ekiti.

With this certificate from SON, Adedeji said Ire bricks could compete globally in the production of bricks.

Aboloma, who was represented by a state officer of SON in Ekiti, Olowu Alex, commended the company for conforming to specification in spite of the economic situation.

The Commissioner for Finance, Ekiti State, Chief Toyin Ojo, who is also Chairman, Ire Clay Products Nigeria Limited, said the company had gone through a lot of problems including rivalry and production problems.

“But thank God, today, Ire productions are 98 per cent of good quality with less than two per cent cracks,” he said.
