The Rector of the Maritime Academy of Nigeria, Oron, Akwa Ibom State, Commodore Duja Effedua (retd.), has asked workers in the Public Affairs Department to be committed to their duties.

Speaking at the academy on Tuesday during a three-day seminar on the role of social and mass media in organisational development, organised for workers of the Public Affairs Department in collaboration with Synovia Limited, Effedua said he was determined to reposition the institution for global competitiveness.

Effedua, who was represented by his special assistant, Dr. John Adeyanju, urged participants to take advantage of the opportunity to learn from the resource persons.

“The importance of social media in the overall performance of the public affairs department cannot be overemphasised as it is gradually taking over traditional media of communication,” he said.

According to the rector, the training was part of his administration’s efforts to build staff capacity for improved productivity.

He added that arrangements for workers of other departments for similar training were in progress.

He, however, asked participants to optimise the use of mass and social media in informing stakeholders on the true position of affairs at the academy.

Earlier, the Head of Public Affairs, Mr. Peter Netson, thanked the rector for his commitment to the capacity building of workers of the department, noting that the department is now better equipped to support the management’s effort at developing the institution.

He explained that the department would work on areas that needed improvement to ensure an enhanced positive reputation for the academy.

Netson also urged participants to put the knowledge gained during the seminar to practise, especially at a time the academy was working towards gaining more relevance in the global scene.

The three-day seminar tagged ‘The role of Social and Mass media in Organisational Development’ featured paper presentations on the role of public relations and its department, news and feature writing, press statement and record keeping, among others.
