  • Don’t Politicise Economic Issues, Makarfi Warns FG

The Federal Government has been urged not to politicise economic issues so as not to jeopardise the modest growth so far recorded and further impoverish the people.

A former Chairman of the Senate Committee on Finance and Appropriation, Ahmed Makarfi, said this in an interview with journalists in Abuja.

He said issues of the economy, security and the fight against corruption must never be politicised as they affect every aspect of the country.

Makarfi stated, “If I were in a position to advise, I will tell President (Muhammadu) Buhari not to play politics with three things: security, the economy and the fight against corruption.

“On the economy, it is a place where we can find a common ground for the good of all of us. It doesn’t mean we will not have our areas of differences. But we must explore as many areas as we can find a common ground so that we can work together.

“On corruption, the government, the private sector, the media, the clergy, all Nigerians must say ‘enough is enough’.”

He added, “It is not only the public sector, there is a lot of corruption in the private sector and even in the religious circle. It is not just in one area and say if you touch corruption, then the country will be better. No! It has to be all-embracing.”
