- Chevron, Partners Invest $25m in Nigeria’s Health Programmes
Chevron Nigeria Limited and its partners have invested $25m in various health development programmes across the country.
Speaking on behalf of the CNL and other Chevron companies in Nigeria and their partners at a conference on sustainable financing to end tuberculosis in Abuja, a representative of the firms, Dr. Femi Pitan, said the provision of quality health care delivery was viewed by the group as a crucial social service.
She stated that the firm had been part of the global fund to fight AIDS, tuberculosis and malaria.
“In Nigeria, Chevron has partnered relevant stakeholders including various levels of government, non-governmental organisations and communities to invest about $25m in various programmes to help fight HIV/AIDS and other diseases,” Pitan said.
She stated the oil firm was committed to the socio-economic development of Nigeria through the building of mutually-beneficial partnerships and supporting government efforts in health development.
Outlining some of the projects embarked upon by the company and its partners in Nigeria, Pitan said, “For tuberculosis prevention and treatment of HIV/AIDS, the NNPC/Chevron Joint Venture donated a tuberculosis treatment centre to St. Kizito Clinic, Lekki, Lagos in 2007.
“In 2008, Chevron donated $5m out of the Chevron Global Fund to Fight AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria to Nigeria’s National Agency for the Control of AIDS in support of AIDS treatment programmes. In 2015, Chevron committed additional $5m to Nigeria to support prevention of mother-to-child transmission of HIV.”
She added, “Last year, Chevron announced the provision of $5m in two instalments of equal amount in 2017 and 2018 to support the implementation of the Chevron-Global Fund Anti-Retroviral Treatment Service Maintenance Programme in Nigeria.”
Pitan stated that from 2008, Star Deepwater Petroleum Limited, an affiliate of Chevron Nigeria Limited, and the parties to the Agbami field, which include the NNPC, Famfa Oil Limited, Statoil Nigeria Limited and Petroleo Brasileiro Nigeria Limited, built, equipped and donated 25 chest clinics to institutions and hospitals across the country as part of their contribution to support the efforts to control, treat and eradicate tuberculosis in Nigeria.
She said, “The strategic choice of intervention in tuberculosis is designed to achieve early detection and proper management of the disease as well as other chest and lung diseases in Nigeria in alignment with the national strategy.
“A total of N2.2bn has been spent on chest clinics built, furnished and equipped by Chevron and the Agbami parties since 2008.”
